4.0 out of 5 stars Primarily a military history, August 16, 2005

This review is from: The British Civil War: The Wars of the Three Kingdoms 1638-1660 (Hardcover)
This is primarily a history of the various and confusing wars in the Stuart/Cromwell era rather tha the political or religious issues. The book's greatest strength is the way it connects the events in the three kingdoms -- England, Ireland, and Scotland --which is essential to see the overall picture in a confusing time. This Royle does well. I would have liked more discussion of the religious issues and a bit less on the battle details, but otherwise a fine history.

This review is from: The British Civil War: The Wars of the Three Kingdoms 1638-1660 (Hardcover)
Trevor Royle's "the British Civil Wars" is a massive tome:888 pages including notes and index. This might intimidate the casual reader, but at their loss. This is a richly written, flowing narrative of one of the watershed events in British, and thus American history. Royle draws fascinating sketches of the personalities involved, giving more shading and nuance as the character becomes more involved in the action. Ideas are examined, and one gets a very clear picture of the viewpoints of the major participants, as well as the way their opponents perceived them. The tragedy of very earnest men, following their ideals, tearing apart the two kingdoms of England and Scotland is indelibly portrayed in this book. The Irish War of confederation also gets an honest and level treatment.

Seven maps are included, as are sixteen pages of black and white illustrations.
I can not imagine a better overview of this colorful, dramatic period. Highly recommended.
