Editorial Reviews

Review

"British Gunmakers Volume Three completes Nigel Brown's fantastic trilogy, which ranks as the most complete account of the activities of gunmaking in Britain ever produced." Shooting Times "The result of years of study, it records the archival knowledge of many long defunct gunmakers, for the first time in many cases. This is in addition to the archive records that were unavailable to the author when the previous volumes went to press." Sporting Rifle "The glossary of technical words and expressions relating to firearms and ammunition is the best I have seen in any gun book. It provides clear explanations of the meaning of not only the basic terms but also some of the more archaic ones whose use is generally confined to those within the trade. The triology is the most complete record of the British gun trade published to date." Classic Arms and Militaria "A compilation of the known history and existing records of a vast number of gunmaking firms, this final volume completes a set of what is undoubtedly the best reference available for those with an interest in British gunmaking... Packed full of information, this book is ideal for any gunmaking aficionado's bookshelf". Shooting Gazette --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magisterial piece of work, January 19, 2006
This review is from: British Gunmakers: Vol.1, London (Hardcover)
Sometimes I wonder how people can devote themselves completely to one task. The making of the OED comes to mind. The two volumes of the British Gunmakers series fit that sort of description. Anyone interested in shotguns or the history of gunmaking will want these books. They will provide information and insight as no other single soure can.

3.0 out of 5 stars Documentational Approach To The London Gun Trade, April 23, 2009
This review is from: British Gunmakers: Vol.1, London (Hardcover)
...this is a reference treatise on the london gun trade that should prove useful to actual gun owners or to those involved in the trade (e.g., auction houses, appraisers, trust and estate lawyers, etc.)...

...the author's legal background strongly permeates the book's style, contents, presentation format, etc...

...coffee table tome seekers or casual dilettantes should probably look elsewhere (i.e., any of douglas tate's books, such as the 'birmingham - and, hopefully, someday, london - gunmakers' by safari press)...

...for the former 'info'-seekers: 5 stars; for the latter 'tainment'-seekers: 3 stars...

4.0 out of 5 stars What you want to know about British gunsmiths, February 17, 2008
This review is from: British Gunmakers: Vol.1, London (Hardcover)
In this book I have found more information about Britisch gunsmiths than was available until now in my library. It solved some problems and gives a lot of answers to me.
