British Isles: A Guide to the Wildlife of Coastal Waters [Paperback]

Tony Soper (Author), Dan Powell (Illustrator)

Available from these sellers.

Book Description

Wildlife guide October 1, 2002
A companion to Tony Soper's successful wildlife guides to Antarctica and the Arctic, this new guide is illustrated throughout with specially commissioned watercolor paintings by renowned wildlife artist Dan Powell. It covers the surface wildlife that inhabits the inshore waters of northwest Europe, ranging from Brittany on the west coast of France to the North Cape, including molluscs, fish, birds, reptiles, and mammals. As a practical guide, it will be welcomed by all who have ever looked out to sea from the British coast or voyaged around its waters by yacht, fishing boat or cruise ship. As a souvenir, it will be the perfect book to bring back memories of these waters and their marine life which inhabits them; its exquisite illustrations and original engravings also recount the history of the discovery and exploration of the seas surrounding Britain.

Many millions of creatures live there, yet on rare days of glassy calm the sea may look featureless, flat and lifeless, to a casual observer. On wild, wet and frightening days it may still seem superficially barren. But appearances are deceptive, and the winds which whip the surface into such varied responses also power the currents which provide the key to unlock a cornucopia of food to support unimaginable quantities of life.
