New decade, new stainless steel sound. Dumbed down? A Buddhist philosopher once said: "Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication." Or as Charlie Sheen says; "winning."

5.0 out of 5 stars They Don't Call This A Classic For Nothing!, January 29, 2009

This review is from: British Steel [Vinyl] (Vinyl)
The first time I heard Judas Priest in Abilene, Texas in 79, I thought they were okay but more or less a ripoff of Black Sabbath. I came around to an entirely different opinion a few years later. These guys rock! They are the definition of NWOBHM.

British Steel is probably their most popular album and I have to agree. I've heard some of the songs ad-nauseum on the radio, but I can take them better than many other bands. JP has a magic to their sound that rises above the crowd.

My version of the LP does not have that last live track on it, so I'm judging it on the original. I have it on cassette and CD also, but like the sound of the LP the best.

Breaking The Law is a classic all by itself. It reminds me of several things. First off is Beavis and Butthead "Scraping The Jaws." An obscure reference, but it fits. Second, it reminds me of God with a Guitar, this totally obnoxious guitar player I knew in Spain in the 80's. This was one of his signature songs along with The Trooper.

Then there is what I call the "Insurance Song." I'm talking about United. It always reminds me of an insurance commercial.

Whatever impressions I get off this, it holds the test of time. I haven't played it as much as they do on the radio, but it has been a staple for years. I just pulled it out again after a 10 year hiatus and it still sounds as good as ever.

Though I have other equally favorite albums by JP, this one is essential if you want to key in on their sound. Highly recommended.
