Review

“Devoted to preserving as well as promoting the environmental, cultural and architectural integrity of the airy, island lifestyle, Connors has successfully composed this comprehensive study. For the first time, a wide variety of data has been compiled to celebrate the material culture and traditions of English island great houses and the island-crafted furniture inside them.” ~Florida Design

"There are books and there are books and this is a feast for the eyes, informative, intriguing, invaluable. It belongs in a place of prominence on your coffee table. British West Indies Style by Michael Connors ($55.00, 200 pages and 200 color images) takes the reader into a little seen world – one of magnificent colonial homes, one of elegance, refined taste. Almost 50 private homes are showcased as are their special craftsmanship, their mahogany writing tables, their linens, gardens and tropical hardwood furniture. The less known islands Bequia and Dominca also have a place in the sun in this winning tome. Much more than a 'picture book,' this is also a mini-history of the islands. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED." ~Frommer Luxury Travel

"From Antigua, Jamaica, Nevis, Barbados, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Mustique to the less-traveled islands of Bequia and Dominica, a beautiful new book by Michael Connors captures the best of British West Indies Style. Many of the English island great houses showcased in the volume are hidden to most visitors. Close to fifty private residences are featured in over 200 full-color photographs taken especially for the book" ~Luxist.com

The only caveat I have to add to previous reviews is that the book's focus is on furniture and interior settings much more than on architecture. Inasmuch as the Caribbean style is defined by the blending of the indoors and the outdoors, the spectacular photographs in this book also mix views of interior and exterior spaces, but I definitely found furniture and interior objects to be the center of attention.

This is just what I was looking for -- an excellent, colorful selection of colonial British West Indian furniture (memories of my childhood) with a well researched text to accompany it. Terrific photography. I think anyone interested (attention cultural anthropologists) in the lifestyle of wealthy British colonists during this period of time and their mixed-race heirs who subsequently inherited their homes and fortunes would enjoy this extended pictorial narrative.

The rich blues and greens of the natural world of the Caribbean, combined with the touch of architects and designers, blend to create rich, colorful pictures in "British West Indies Style: Antigua, Jamaica, Barbados, and Beyond," just out from Rizzoli.

West Indies antiques expert Michael Connors digs into the history of nearly 50 of the great houses, estates and town houses across the British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, St. Kitts, Barbados, Nevis and other locales. The homes' open spaces are meant to take advantage of the sunny, breezy climate of the islands, with the colors of the wood and paint sometimes blending, sometimes contrasting with the outdoor views. Many photos and with the accompanying text explain the history or importance of the furniture, pots, molding or other woodwork displayed in these houses, most of which have some lengthy history as the property of early European planters. Other photos show the influence of the sea or the islands' hilly landscape, gardens and fields and walled courtyards.

Beautiful and informative to peruse at any time, this book might best be enjoyed when winter's cold blast has arrived.

Once again Michael Connors has found a way to inspire longings for the Caribbean with British West Indies Style: Antigua, Jamaica, Barbados, and Beyond.

Connors' scholarly and knowledgeable text accompanied by sumptuous photography by Brent Winebrenner will be a valued addition to the everyone's collection and coffee table, not just those who are familiar with the Caribbean and its environs.

I have the book and I highly recommend it. It will make you want to visit the British West Indies as well as the Caribbean at large.

Beautiful book with lots of ideas. Decorated my dining room to match one found in the book, also used the 'sugar plantation' idea for my flooring.
