5.0 out of 5 stars Britney from all angles, January 12, 2004

This review is from: Britney: Not That Innocent (Paperback)
In writing Britney: Not That Innocent, Larry Getlen was about 90% successful at creating an objective portrayal of Britney Spears. That is, if you love Britney, you will probably enjoy all the detailed information the book provides, but first you will have to learn to ignore the unobjective, condescending remarks about Britney that Getlen, an apparent non-fan, occasionally lets slip through the cracks of his professionalism. (If you only have a passing interest in Britney, the remarks probably won't bother you.) Truly, however, serious fans of Britney should be brave - the book really is an amazing account of Britney's career thus far, not just step by step, but inch by inch. The book provides details upon details of both Britney's successes and controversies - a must-have, I think, for anyone who wants to know everything he or she can know about Britney and what makes that intriguing girl tick. The book covers Britney's entire career up until just before the release of In The Zone, so of course, and unfortunately, there are no comments about the success of the album's #1 debut(Britney's 4th in a row) or the new controversies of "the kiss" and "the marriage." I read the book myself from cover to cover in about three hours, and, even though Getlen didn't always portray Britney in a good light, I still came away from the book liking her no less and actually feeling sorry for the way too many unjustified rumors have been spread about her by others. This book reminded me that yes, Britney has made a few mistakes, but also that everybody makes mistakes, and that she has been unfairly exploited by the friend-or-foe media, who, through their camera lenses, watch like a hawk every move she makes, leaving her no room for error(even though to err is human). If I could have given it 4.5 stars, I would have, for Getlen's occasional discrepancies, but since it was such an interesting and informative read, I give Britney: Not That Innocent a five. Anyone very interested in Britney Spears really ought to give this book a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shocking, Entertaining & Insightful, August 16, 2004
This review is from: Britney: Not That Innocent (Paperback)
As you read this biography, Larry Getlen will paint the picture of "the making of a pop princess" from the pitfalls to the evolving "not that innocent" young girl. From the files of the National Enquirer there are details on Britney's childhood, love-life, music, performances, and much more to enjoy!

From a critical point of view, I found the overall writings of this book to be too one-sided toward the author's thinking at certain points. There were times I stopped on a page and thought to myself, "No, this is not my opinion!"

As a former Mousketter, Britney's training shows [as so does Christina Aguilera's and Justin Timberlake's] however, the author repeatedly mentions Britney's lip synching, or lack of appreciation for her fans. And even comments on her "boobs". In an age were beautifying oneself is so crucial I don't see the point in making such an issue of this as I also don't agree that her clothes or her movements convey sexual references in the way Larry mentions. As a former dancer myself, I can say the industry of the dance world does not wear layers of clothing to dance. And the fact is that dancing is an art that few posess as well as Britney. She may be changing her style but I think that's a great step toward a new era of her life. It is apparent Britney is reaching more fans of all ages with her new 'persona'. I am happy to say as a big Madonna and Christina fan that now I am a big Britney fan too [and I'm not a teenager].

I enjoyed all the information on her past lovers as I could relate to all her "bad boy" choices as well as her "not so good" hanging-out friends. Most average young adults who are popular go through those things so here again I don't see why Larry paints such a dark picture. If an average teen doesn't live life and learn from his or her mistakes then he or she just isn't living or learning. Part of growing up is taking risks and Britney has proven that those are the qualities that make her into the successful over-achiever that she is and the down-to-earth person so many love. So again, Larry looses me.

On the whole, if the author would have put a more positive spin with reinforcements of the good qualities Britney has he would have succeeded in making the average fan or reader see a nicer Britney. But then again, the title of this book is NOT THAT INNOCENT. He definitely succeeds in reinforcing that throughout the entire book. So pick this book, sit back and just enjoy. I read this book in a few hours [I couldn't put the book down for a second]. It is a nice small paperback size to take to the beach or just snuggle in bed with it. I highly recommend it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Britney Revealed, November 19, 2003
This review is from: Britney: Not That Innocent (Paperback)
There's been a lot written about Britney Spears, but Wild Thing eschews the usual sugary PR to reveal what really makes the sexy pop icon tick -- both good and bad. It's a fascinating read as author Getlen peels away the glitz to show us both Britney the person and Britney the mega personality. This is a must-read for anyone who's even mildly interested in Britney Spears or the pop-music machine that made her a superstar.
