Many great works in definitive performances,
By Santa Fe Listener (Santa Fe, NM USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: Britten Conducts Britten (Audio CD)
This 7-CD set, part of Decca's multi-box packaging of Britten's complete output, capturres him in tow roles, eminent composer and superlative conductor. The rpice is incredibly low, the sonics are the best that the industry had to offer in the Sixties and Seventies, and every musician involved was the best that Britain had to offer. The compilers have mixed some very obscure and little played works (the oreintal-flavored baallet, Prine of the Pagodas, the Piano Concerto), acknowledged masterpieces (the Serenade for Tenor, Horn, and Strings, Less Illuminations, Nocturne), and some neglected works that deserve the status of masterpieces (the Violin concerto, the Holy Sonnets of John Donne).
Since the whole collection sells at super-bargain price, there's an incentive to buy without risk. Even if certain works don't apppeal -- I almost never relisten to the tough, late music such as the Cello Symphony, for example, and find Prince of the Pagodas a tinkly bore -- there are any number of unknown works that will delight newcomers. Styles range from early and extremely accessible (the Simple Symphony, the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, without narratory by the way) to some thorny, dark expressions that take real concentration (Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo). In any event, this is great music-making by any standard. Britten remains the greatest exponent of his own works and is likely to remain that way for decades. Piano Concerto, Op. 13 Violin Concerto in D minor Op. 15 Symphony for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 68 Sinfonia da Requiem, Op. 20 Cantata Misericordium, Op. 69 Prelude & Fugue for 18 strings, Op. 29 Simple Symphony, Op. 4 Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge, Op. 10 The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra, Op. 34 The Prince of the Pagodas, Op. 57 Diversions for piano (left hand) and orchestra, Op. 21 Seven Sonnets of Michelangelo, Op. 22 The Holy Sonnets of John Donne, Op. 35 Songs and Proverbs of William Blake Winter Words, Op. 52 Tit for Tat Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings, Op. 31 Les illuminations, Op. 18 Nocturne, Op. 60 for tenor, obbligato instruments and strings

A Great Britten Set,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Britten Conducts Britten (Audio CD)
I love Britten's music and there really isn't much competition in the way of performances. This box set, which is primarily comprised of orchestral works is one of the best Britten sets available on the market I think. This set, however, does not include his highly-acclaimed recording of his "War Requiem." It can be bought seperately: Britten: War Requiem.
Britten occupies an interesting time in classical music history. It's before the whole concept of contemporary classical took way. His music looks to the past as much as it does to the future. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here's the contents of this set: Piano Concerto, Op.13 Track 1 1.
