This review is from: Britten: War Requiem/Bliss: Morning Heroes (Audio CD)
I bought this for the "War Requiem". The tempos are good on this recording, but the sound mix is just odd. They seemed to try to express the spacing separation that occurs between the three main vocal groups in a live performance by changing the sound levels for the three different groups. It doesn't work. If you balance your sound system for the main choir and soprano soloist, the boy's choir comes in so softly you can barely hear them, and the two male singers with the chamber orchestra are so loud that you scramble for your remote to turn the volume down. Please, just trust Mr. Britton and his marvelous writing. He has already differentiated between the groups by varying the instruments that are used to accompany each group. There is no need for an artificial sound mix to bring this point home.
