The first three chapters define broadband access and clarify the broadband services and network architecture. The next nine chapters describe the more mature aspects of SONET/SDH, ATM and Internet technology, including interfaces, protocols and management. The five subsequent chapters cover the more recent developments in ADSL (Asymmetrical Digital Subscriber Line) technology and in VB5 signalling for ATM.
The final four chapters look to the future. The first of these examines optical accesses both with and without VDSL (Very-high-speed Digital Subscriber Line) transmission. The second looks at enhanced ATM features, including protection switching and soft and multipoint connections. The third covers the use of optical technology for LANs and for efficient long-distance Internet communications. The final chapter looks at the introduction of quality of service in IP through MPLS (MultiProtocol Label Switching) and RSVP (Resource Reservation Protocol) enhancements.
I wrote this book for three reasons. First, although some excellent texts exist on mature broadband technologies, it was often difficult to keep track while referring to several books, and the relationship between technology and management was seldom clear. Second, the more advanced aspects of broadband access were often described in papers and standards that had not been clarified or summarised in an existing text. The third reason for writing is referred to in the preface of the book. Since its publication, the text has surprised and pleased me by becoming the most useful single reference that I now possess.
