Product Description

Broadfall Drop Front Breeches Pattern. Breeches were worn by both military and civilians in the 1700s and early 1800s. Usually made of broadcloth or linen, they were also worn in leather and were buttoned or buckled just below the knees or tied with a draw string. In the fur trade the legs were extended but pants kept the drop front, the full gathered seat and the gussets in the back of the waistband. Variations are given in the pattern for knee closing and leg length and it comes in waist sizes 30 through 42. The pattern is easy to use and comes complete with a glossary of terms and a section on "Working with Leather" so that almost anyone will be comfortable using this pattern. 18th century, Mountain Man, Rendezvous, Louis and Clarke, Colonial, American Revolutionary War, Fur Trade, Trapper Impressions, Jerimiah Johnson. Great for SASS and Pow Wow living history events.

4.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to follow, but results worthwhile!, May 9, 2011

I made a pair of the knee-length breeches for my husband with this pattern. The result was very good, and the pattern does make up beautifully. However, the directions are not as complete as what comes with "regular" commercial patterns. Add the fact that this is an unusually constructed garment, and you could have serious difficulty.

I've done a fair amount advanced-level sewing and I've studied pattern drafting from scratch, worked as a professional seamstress, etc. If you have a lot of sewing experience, if you can handle the "advanced" Vogue patterns, and if you have good spatial thinking to fill in for the vague instructions, you will do fine. You'll just have to think it through a bit and re-read the instructions a few times, then you'll be able to do it. I do not recommend this pattern for a beginner due to the vague instructions. However, the construction of the garment itself is not too difficult, and the finished result is excellent.

I took this pattern and fabric to a professional Seamstress. The patterns instruction were poor at best, missing steps and very confusing. Don't waste your money on this patters. Authentic, maybe, usable, not.
