5.0 out of 5 stars ¡Once more, Julie prooves how wonderful she is!. She`s ours!
Every time I hear her voice I feel it deep in my heart. That`s inspiration, serenity, just verve and zest!. 1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Terrible
Julie Andrews was one of my favorites up to ... maybe the '70s. I saw her in Camelot on and of course in The Sound of Music. When I bought this CD several years ago, I thought I'd be hearing the same pure voice and diction. Instead, I truly believe that this must have been her last CD leading up to throat surgery in 1997. She talks through some songs. (Her diction is...

Every time I hear her voice I feel it deep in my heart. That`s inspiration, serenity, just verve and zest!. Although all the CD is great (orchestration, arrangments, etc.) there are some magical moments along the play: of course "The sound of music" is the main theme, where Julie retakes that spirit of the movies, but with a warmer touch (a lot more mature lady), and the same freshness. "I have dreamed" is specially beautiful in Julie`s voice, with an amazing violin solo. "The waltz carousel" is almost perfect!... please enjoy "Out of my dreams" and "This nearly was mine", my favorite ones in that medley. In "It never entered my mind-Spring is here" Julie shares all her sweetness with us, developing a feeling that filled my heart with melancholy. "Edelweiss" is a clear light point, with spectacular orchestra performance. I love Julie and I`ll always be grateful for all the joy she has brought to my life and to the whole world. You can`t miss this CD. You can`t miss this gift of the most talented lady of the century!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE LEGENDARY VOICE: JULIE ANDREWS, September 9, 2002
By
Rick Sanchez (San Antonio, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Broadway (Audio CD)
If there were an ideal voice that I think anybody would die to have it would have to be Julie Andrews' voice. Her voice exemplifies the perfect technique that every vocalist strives for. Diction, Vowel choice, Consonance, Word Painting/Coloring, Phrasing, Dynamics, Wide Range, Flexibility, and HEART!

This is one of the greatest recordings of Andrews. Her crystal clear voice combined with great orchestral accompaniment is absolutely lovely. It would be hard to pick my favorites out of this album, because each song is so meaningful that you don't want to leave it out. So I'll pick a few. Obviously the Opening is definitely a favorite, it has always been since I saw the movie when I was so young I can't remember how long ago. The Sound of Music is the SOUND of great MUSIC. Julie's voice is probably perfect for any ballad, but I would have never imagined how much I would adore her belting voice. Her belt is nothing less of her classical voice, still keeps the same focus and HEART if not more. Great examples for this are I WISH I WERE IN LOVE AGAIN, THIS CAN'T BE LOVE, BEWITCHED, and COCKEYED OPTIMIST. It is simply beautiful and definitely BROADWAY.

This CD is filled with many treasures. Julie Andrews with her voice, her performance stamina, and her delivery is a LEGEND.

5.0 out of 5 stars Premier Julie, August 28, 1999
This review is from: Broadway (Audio CD)
I have been a Julie Andrews fan for ages and this is by far my favorite of all her recordings. Suprisingly, it is not her interpretations of the Rogers and Hammerstein songs on here that shines(although she sings them all exquisitely) but the Rogers and Hart songs(Where or When and It Never Entered My Mind / Spring Is Here combo especially). No one can interpret these Broadway classics as she can. It amazes me that even at the age she recorded this(late 50's) she could still hit those high notes, as at the end of this version of The Sound of Music.

It is a real tragedy that surgery has ruined her vocal chords. She was scheduled to record and release a CD of Gershwin tunes, which I'm certain would have been exquisite.

This is a must buy for any fan of Julie Andrews! Her diction was flawless (as always)but in this album the depth of the lyrics seem to dig even deeper than her earlier work. "Edelweiss" was sung with such deepth and meaning that it brought a tear to my eye. This is truly a masterpiece. So many great songs! If you are not a Julie fan after listening to this CD you soon will be! If any Julie Fans would like to chat, feel free to send me an e mail!

5.0 out of 5 stars What a reminder!, July 12, 2001
This review is from: Broadway (Audio CD)
If you've forgotten some things, this recording will remind you...

what inspired phrasing can add to a performance... what proper diction lends to a song... what a superb vocal artist sounds like...

If you miss these things, then listen to this!

And, if you've forgotten the art of Lorenz Hart's lyrics...they're here, too!

The arrangements are lush, and the performance has class!

What a treat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Still a superb album, January 10, 2007
This review is from: Broadway (Audio CD)
I find myself listening to this album and wondering "What if". Julie was supposed to go and record an album of Gershwin tunes before her voice was lost to the famous "botched surgery" and I find myself hearing possibilities of what that album could have sounded like here. Both of Julie's studio albums this one and the 1996 release are testaments to how timeless Julie's voice was. Everything about this album is exquisite, to the song selections, the arrangements, and orchestrations to Dame Julie's voice itself. This is a true collectors item not only for what we no longer can hear, but for the beauty that has been encased in this time capsule of stunning music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fair Julie, but schizoid song choices, December 1, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Broadway (Audio CD)
The one-minute opening to "The Sound of Music" is so gloriously thrilling you're tempted to giggle: can Julie Andrews pull off singing this oft-parodied number--the embodiment of her wholesome goody-goody image--with a straight face? The music crescendos, and Andrews' heavenly voice glides into the opening note with such aplomb it's dizzying. The problem with doing an album of Richard Rodgers music is that his career is so schizoid; songs with Lorenz Hart were as sardonic and cosmopolitan as Manhattan, whereas his work with Oscar Hammerstein is corn as high as...well, "the elephant's eye." Andrews pulls off her "Sound of Music" reprises neatly--her "Eidelweiss" is a model of simplicity--but much of the other Hammerstein material is too gloppy even for her crisp professionalism to completely transcend. But much of the Hart material--surprise!--is right up her alley. You'll have a "Funny Valentine" that borders on the dour, but her "Where or When" is completely spellbinding, and her linking of "It Never Entered My Mind" to "Spring Is Here" creates a tone poem of Manhattan in April that is as wistful and heartbreaking as you could ask for. Her follow-up CD "Here I'll Stay" may be the stronger album overall, but the gems that sparkle here really shine with Andrews' special crystalline brilliance. If you never understood why for a few short years in the late 1950's-early 1960's Julie Andrews was THE female entertainer in America, this is an essential primer.

5.0 out of 5 stars ESSENTIAL, POIGNANT, THRILLING, AND SAD, April 17, 2000
By
Dewey Mee (ELLENSBURG, WA.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Broadway (Audio CD)
The centerpiece of this divine CD is "The Waltz Carousel"; an ACTING tour-de-force for Julie Andrews as she takes the listner on a journey through the stages of love! She perfectly captures the sound of bittersweet longing and regret on the Rodgers And Hart mood pieces "Spring Is Here-It Never Entered My Mind" and "Where Or When." Throughout the album, Andrews seems to enjoy experimenting with the darker shadings and colors of a more mature voice. She's a model of emotional simplicity on "Edelweiss". The most risky song here is "The Sound Of Music." Listening to it today, I don't know whether to burst with joy or tears as Andrews sings, "my heart will be blessed with the sound of (and then a thrilling octive leap) MUSIC...and I'll SING ONCE MORE! " We are reminded of what all of us lost after Andrews' 1997 throat surgery went disasterously, devastatingly wrong. This is an ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL CD.
