Book Description

Discographies: Association for Recorded Sound Collections Discographic Reference September 30, 1996

Is there a recording of the songs from Smile? How many scores by Sondheim have been recorded in the past ten years? Answers to these and other such questions can be found in this unique volume. All shows are listed alphabetically, and essential information is included for each song, as well as other recordings of the same score and who recorded them. There are performer, composer, lyricist, and musical director indexes, making this a user-friendly reference. This volume, along with the author's previous discographies (Greenwood 1987, 1989, 1990), provides a definitive reference source for recorded musicals—from Broadway, Hollywood, television, or merely hoping-to-be-produced—up to 1995. The work is useful not only to scholars and students but also to the collector of musical show recordings.

Show recordings are listed by title in alphabetical order. Each song is listed in the order it was recorded on the album or CD, and the performer of the song is given. The recording is identified by composer, lyricist, and musical director, as well as the date of original production and date of this particular recording. There is a chronology of all shows included in this volume, and there are two indexes: one by performer and one by composer, lyricist, and musical director.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Primarily a continuation of Lynch's three previously published discographies (Broadway on Record [1987], Movie Musicals on Record [1989], and TV and Studio Cast Musicals on Record [1990]), this discography includes CD and LP cast recordings of Broadway and off-Broadway musicals between the years 1985^-95 and orginal cast albums of shows before 1985 that were released after Broadway on Record was first published in 1987 or that were unknown or unavailable then. It also covers recorded music from animated films, television musical recordings, and recordings from nightclub revues and studio casts.

All entries are arranged alphabetically by title of show. This is followed by relevant dates; the name of the issuing company; catalog number; notation of mono or stereo; total playing time; credits for composer, lyricist, and conductor; source-material credits; cast members who sing; names of songs in order of appearance; and miscellaneous notes concerning discrepancies between the original production and the recording.

Titles are then listed chronologically in relation to when they were first produced and performed (dates of recording, if different, are also noted here). The discography has two indexes: one lists performers in alphabetical order along with the titles of the albums they sing on; the other identifies "technical people" associated with the listed albums (lyricists, composer, and conductors) as well as the albums they contributed to. A song index would have been helpful, but the compiler notes in his introduction that it proved "unwieldy" to prepare; he refers readers to other published song indexes.

Broadway, Movie, TV, and Studio Cast Musicals on Record is recommended only for libraries that own Lynch's other three discographies.
