Product Description

Broan Elite: Proof that a trash compactor can look smashing. Convenience made easy in a few simple steps. Like its more automated sibling, Broan Elite trash compactors simplify waste containment and removal. A full-swinging, reversible door opens to an easy-to-clean compartment and a full-extension trash bucket. Its simplified control panel requires just two settings to start the process. Turn the activation key, close the door and touch one button. That's it. Removing the compacted bag is easy, too—lower the bucket front and slide the bag forward to the floor. There's no more lifting over the side. Broan Elite compactors also use our exclusive six-month odor control and neutralizing system. Rotate the dial once a month and a fresh segment is ready to work. Broan has been designing these convenience appliances for nearly 40 years, refining the product while defining the category. And the result A new line of products that is the perfect complement to today's high-style appliances, and environmentally-conscious homeowners. Broan Elite XE and Broan Elite trash compactors take convenience, hygiene and style to a new level.

We have had a compactor since 1967. They normally last 10 years+. The last one though, a Whirlpool lasted only 2 years and that was a troublesome 2 years. I decided to replace it with the more expensive Broan with it's bigger motor.

My main complaint after a week's use. Instead of just kicking the toe piece and having the drawer pop out as other compactors build them you must open the cabinet door on the Broan, then bend over and pull out the drawer. No handle on the drawer either! What's with this? Open a door, bend over, pull out the drawer, throw your napkin in the bin, push the drawer shut, then close the drawer! I'm in my twilight years. Bending over is not high on my list of want to do things. What genius engineered that? Couldn't they at least have spring loaded the drawer so that it would pop out a bit when the door was opened?

Now the good part. The compactor cycle is quiet and VERY powerful! Sounds like a swiss watch with no squeaks and groans. The extra PAC works well. Don't buy a compactor without this feature. The drawer does slide out easily and it just appears sturdier then the other compactors. Also the drawer is not accordion pleated like most compactors. That should make it much, much easier to clean. The bags are much easier to put in it because you don't have that interference at the front where the drawer and the door are of one piece design.

Bottom line: Worth the extra expense but the two step process to throw away garbage is definitely two steps backwards! Are you listening Broan?

I have owned a 12" Broan 1050 trash compactor for five years at my previous home and loved it, which is why I decided to stick with the Brand. Unfortunately, I am dissppointed in this new version after being spoiled by earlier models.

The quality of the materials used and the compacting mechanism in the smaller 12" compactor model is far superior than the updated 15" model. The 15" stainless door looks great in the cabinets and appears to have the capacity for a weeks plus of garbage. However, once you open the door you will realize only the bottom half is used to place the garbage. The compacting mechanism in this model does not compact as well as the older 1050 model. We used to only take out garbage once a week on garbage night and now find ourselves taking out garbage twice a week (we have not added more garbage).

Somehow Broan designed this model to be wider which takes up more real estate in my kitchen while reducing the quality of the crush.

I'm copying and pasting the review I used at Home Depot, because that is where I bought this compactor. However, I spent a lot of time on this review, and I love buying stuff on Amazon too, so I decided to also put my review here. The exact model I have is the black 15" Elite model, but I'm sure this review applies to just about any of their 15" elite models.

My unit arrived slightly defective. The hold feature doesn't work. So far, I've had a repair guy out three times, and he still has a part on order to try to fix it. Fortunately, the compactor works in normal mode, so this hasn't prevented me from using it. (One other switch broke within the first week, but the repair man was able to fix this on his second visit. So it was only out of commission for about a week.)

The good news is that Broan has been very nice and helpful, and has paid for all of the service visits. So, you can have confidence in their 1-year warranty, and if you get unlucky like me at least you don't have to pay for repairs. With any luck, yours will simply work right out of the box!

Because of these warranty issues I've had to deal with, I can't give this a 5-star review. If it arrived in perfect working order, I would have been happy to give it 5-stars.

But I can still confidently give it 4-stars. I love this compactor. I'll list the positives, and then address some of the negatives I've read about it in other reviews:

Positives:

Excellent horse power. This unit crushes glass bottles with ease. In fact, it is so powerful that I decided to stop crushing my glass to a pulp. Now, I use the first glass bottle "popping" as the sign that my trash is full, and I take it out to the can.

I have waited to do this review until I had used this compactor for a while. We've owned compactors for over 30 years, so, never having had a Broan, I was a bit apprehensive. The unit appears to be stoutly built and does sell for a higher price than some other similar products. Overall, we're relatively pleased, although there are a couple of points I can make: The bags are plastic...they tend to get holed and ripped as trash accumulates in the compactor. The bin itself has also accumulated some dents and dings...hope it won't be trouble downstream. The bag change can be a bit agravating, and the way the front panel of the bin unbuckles to change the bag is a bit troublesome.

But here is a point not to be missed: Be careful when you order replacement bags: I ordered a large supply of bags from AMAZON...there was no mention of size. The compactor came with several bags, so by the time I got around to opening my huge supply of bags...THEY WERE THE WRONG SIZE!!!! I attempted to return them, but AMAZON nor the vendor from whom they were shipped were interested since more than 30 days had elapsed. I'll admit...it was probably the most peeved I've ever been at AMAZON. But, hey!!!! I've got a life time supply of heavy duty Broan brand TRASH BAGS out in my carport...they just won't work in the Broan compactor in the kitchen.
