From the Back Cover

Key Benefit: For nearly 30 years and seven editions, the newly retitled Brock Biology of Microorganisms has been the bible for microbiology with a focus on microbes as organisms in their own right. The book offers balanced, in-depth treatment of basic microbiological principles, including molecular biology, medical microbiology, genetics, immunology, and other topics. Key Topics: Contains an early and solid chemistry chapter (Ch. 2), which readers need to understand the metabolism of microorganisms and its applications in industry, ecology and medicine. Enhancements to the Eighth Edition include new chapters on Regulation of Gene Expression (Ch. 7) and Microbial Control Agents (Ch. 11). Content updates reflect the latest information in biotechnology, metabolic diversity, and, in particular, immunology. Within the microbial disease chapters, the authors have included a more global approach in terms of disease occurence and epidemiology.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good general reference, April 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Brock's Biology of Microorganisms (Hardcover)
This is probably one of the best general overviews of the various facets of Microbiology. As a student, it was probably the best book I could save as a reference. Subjects delineated in a clear, concise fashion; as well as being fairly detailed in most areas. The diagrams are well done, and helpful. The writing also flows well and makes it a easy to read, unlike some texts. All in all, one of the best textbooks I have seen and used, also one of the few I'll keep.

3.0 out of 5 stars Uh, oh, colourflash!, July 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Brock's Biology of Microorganisms (Hardcover)
D....! I bought this book, lost money. A lot of errors covered under lots of colour, e.g. one page for one graphic about Agrobacterium-infection, guess what's missing. Another one: look at the F0/F1-ATPases, there is no proton-flow through the head, this is known for years, an essential fact, even for an under- graduate course! Also the chapters about genetics and signal transduction: incomplete, poor graphics, but a lot of nice colours again. These "small" errors sum up. In my opinion it's impossible today to write a comprehensive text book which covers all topics about microbiology, an undergraduate should first learn how a prokaryotic cell works, it is impossible to learn it with this book. Then I stopped reading, for the good section about systematics it receives at last three stars, otherwise it would have been two.
