Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is by far the best edition of this book since section editors have made certain that each chapter is current and follows the same format of therapeutic overview, mechanisms of action, pharmacokinetics, relation of mechanisms of action to clinical response, pharmacovigilance (side effects, clinical problems, and toxicity), and new horizons. The focus is on prototypic drugs with ample use of tables and boxes to provide valuable summaries of how important clinical drugs differ from the prototypic drugs described in detail.

The multicolored figures are both attractive and informative. Each chapter ends with a short, relevant, up-to-date further reading list and a few self-assessment questions. The questions highlight key concepts and drugs covered in the chapter, but are not of the style or complexity of questions currently used on USMLE examinations. Excellent descriptive answers to the self-assessment questions are provided in the appendix. Buyers are also provided with a PIN number for a Student Consult web site which includes complete contents of the book online plus multiple choice questions with feedback as well as other learning enrichments.

This edition is a markedly improved book that rivals Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, 10th edition, by Katzung (McGraw-Hill, 2007), as a leading pharmacology textbook for teaching pharmacology to health professionals. I highly recommend this fifth edition for adoption." - Thomas L. Pazdernik, PhD (University of Kansas Medical Center), from Doody's Reviews

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Primer for Medical Students, January 30, 2010
This review is from: Brody's Human Pharmacology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 5e (Human Pharmacology (Brody)) (Paperback)
This is an excellent intro to Pharmacology for first-year medical students. It's a quick read for those who have taken their basic physics, chemistry and biology. It is very comprehensive from the basic mechanisms to the latest in gene therapy. It is not detailed enough to be a clinical reference on the wards, but that is not its purpose. If starting from scratch in Pharm, this would be a good adjunct to buy for first-year courses. I would recommend one of the giant Pharm texts to use as a more detailed reference.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent more detailed overview, but not a review book., January 29, 2010
This review is from: Brody's Human Pharmacology: With STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 5e (Human Pharmacology (Brody)) (Paperback)
I think the book is detailed on a level that some medical students might find necessary for their coursework. Its level of detail is intermediate - its somewhere between the massive amount of information contained in Goodman & Gilman's and the paucity of information in a review book such as High-Yield Pharmacology. Unfortunately, I think the level of detail is just slightly greater than what I needed during my medical school pharmacology course. I would be more likely to recommend a review book with slightly less detail such as Lippincott's Illustrated Review of Pharmacology. The approach taken by the book, however, is excellent - the order and presentation of the material is logical. Brody's Human Pharmacology is a comprehensive textbook that provides a great deal of information in a clear, thorough manner using numerous visual aids. This textbook covers anything one could expect to need for an introductory-intermediate pharmacology course. I found the presentation of the material to be very helpful, the explanations were clear and easy-to-understand in a not so easy-to-understand subject. The main limitation of the text lies in the amount of the information and the focus - which is more focused on basic science rather than clinically-focused information.
