I was looking for a propane grill in the $400 range to replace a 15-year-old Weber Spirit and saw that Broil King received favorable ratings on About.com.

This product has a nice, even temperature across the whole cooking surface using Broil-King's Stainless Steel Super 8 burner -- it's basically a figure 8 with flame ports on the inside and outside edges. The flow valves turn very easily over a wide range of motion to provide excellent control over the flame and heat. The grill also includes the Flav-R-Wave bar which, like the vaporizer bars found in many other grills, burns off grill drippings for added flavor. The side trays fold down for easy storage (nice feature!). Assembly was almost too easy.

There were a few parts problems with the grill. Several slats on the cast-iron cooking grates were broken off (skimpy packaging) and the hood-mounted thermometer reads about 150 degrees even with the hood open on a cool day. A quick call to Broil-King's parts department and warranty replacements for both were on the way.

The left burner is a bit small and underpowered -- it's good for keeping sauces warm but doesn't provide enough space, say, for boiling up some corn in a pot. I would have also liked to see a fuel gauge included (I found a good inline gauge for $12 at a local big-box store).

All in all, it's a great grill for a great price and strongly recommend it. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the packaging/parts problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very hapy with this BBQ!, March 31, 2011

The people who were shipping the BBQ to the house called us in advance to see what day/time would be good to drop it off so someone was there. That was really great b/c we didn't want someone to steal our BBQ if no one was home! It was a little difficult to put together b/c the instructions weren't the best (no words just pictures)but it wasn't too bad. The frame is kind of cheap looking but the actual BBQ is awesome! We have used our BBQ about 3-4 times and we love it! It is so much better than our last BBQ and we are enjoying it very much. I would recommend this product to my friends and family.

I received the unit came within the time specified plus an extra day due to the nasty weather we're getting in New England this year. The box was fully intact and contained no bent, scratched, dinged, or missing pieces as have been associated with other units shipped to a residence.

I layed out all of the pieces and absorbed the steps necessary to build this unit. I gathered my socket set, needle-nose pliers, some box wrenches and a range of phillips screwdrivers. You really need to go slow and put the pieces together gently to test the fit. In most cases, if you have to force it, you're doing it wrong. I have very large hands and but still managed to thread each nut by hand in the tightest spaces. Just go slow and you'll be just fine.

As for the quality of the unit, I am very impressed with the materials used. The oven is completely cast aluminum. In places where the heat impact is low and the mechanical stresses are light, the manufacturer opted for plastic as in the side shelves and wheel base. When the shelves are fully engaged in their open/engaged position, they are definitely sturdy enough for even the largest feast you may need to prepare. Just don't try to rest your anvil on them! The base is ridiculously strong though I wouldn't use it to move a safe or anything like that. In areas where the heat impact is low, but some strength is needed, the manufacturer opted for regular old painted steel as in the cabinet which contains the the LP tank. There isn't much space for anything besides the tank down there so don't be disappointed that you can't store your spare 5 gallon container of peanut oil. There is also a gap and heat shield between the lower oven half and the LP cabinet to ensure that temperatures don't get critical down there. This does 3 things: Keeps your cabinet steel from oxidizing abnormally fast, keeps gas hose from losing plasticizer and developing cracks from heat, and keeps the tank temperature low. There are "hook" things on the inside of the cabinet doors, but the design is odd in that they are just indentations in the molding and aren't any good for anything but utensils or mits with cloth or rawhide loops. Same for the "hooks" on the side shelfs. They are merely nodules you can loop some type of rawhide or cloth onto. Personally, I think they dropped the ball here. I wasn't expecting to be able to hang pots, pans, or skillets in these areas, but these nodules are C- at best.

The burners, valves, and just about everything used to heat food has come already installed for your convenience. I checked the snugness of everything and all was well. The lower half of the oven is completely enclosed on the bottom unlike other units that keep it open to cut costs in materials. There is a hole located in the back center of the oven floor which is used to relieve grease and dripping build-up.Under the hole is a square aluminum (think disposable) pan used to catch the runoff. To facilitate the grease flow into the hole, there are wide and sloped channels which run along the back floor of the oven. Keeping this area clean and tidy to reduce fires will be very easy because it's all open and accessable to rags, sticks, scrapers, or whatever other implements you may use to clean the grease. The unit comes with cast iron grates that are shaped like a "V". The pointy side of the "V" is great for attaining those black sear marks that everyone associates with grilling. The open side of the "V" is apparently good for catching drippings when you're cooking larger fattier cuts like flank steaks. The flash arrestor is one-piece and is made from some light guage stainless steel. It takes a real beating so I am prepared to change that piece every two years or so. The Super8 burner is stainless steel and puts out a really nice flame pattern. This unit heats up fast even with outside temperatures of 10F and moderate wind. The unit also has an enamel coated warming rack which stits directly over the grilling surface when the lid is closed. When you open the lid (and you put your unit together properly) the warming rack swings all the way to the rear and exposes 100% of the cooking surface. This is great as it can be difficult to flip and turn items when the rack is over the grates as on other models. I estimate there is 8 inches of clearance between the grilling surface and the warming rack when the lid is in the closed position. As far as hot/cold spots on the grilling surface, I honestly haven't used the unit enough to recognize any. Besides, all grills have uneven temperature cooking surfaces. The good cooks find them and use them to their advantage. The lazy and unskilled just whine and complain and use that excuse when their food is underdone or blackened to a state of elemental carbon. The side burner is fairly standard. It's no blow torch so don't expect to do your next clam bake or crawfish boil on it, but it can roast red peppers, fry bacon, cook a side dish/glaze or marinade, and saute peppers and onions like a champion.

Having owned a Kenmore grill for 9 years and replacing 100% of its guts after 5, I think I picked a winner with this grill. Much thought was put into the materials which comprise the unit. The manufacturer seems to have used the correct materials in the correct places, and really, that's what makes a good piece of equipment whether it be a screw gun, stand mixer, or garden hose. People drool over grills made by.....you know...the company that starts with a W? Give this grill a shot. It's every bit as good if not better than a comparable grill by "W", and light years better than the soon-to-be rust and slag piles found in the box stores that are pushed heavily every May/June for spring and fathers day sales. Good luck
