I bought the Toastmaster Eclipse burner and replaced it every year since something always went wrong.

This burner is a marvel. The heat control is incredibly precise, from just keeping something tepid or warm to full-blown raging heat.

Do not hesitate.

Update on April 22:

I am now far less enthusiastic:

1. The cast iron top is NOT (reapeat NOT) easy to clean. It is so abrasive it will eat up sponges, paper towels and every thing else.
2. The cast iron top stains very easily...with no hope of reducing the stain.
3. Do not expect to change temperatures cooking on this top. The cast iron retains heat for a VERY long time. Trying to move from one temperature to another takes very many minutes...from high to low as much as 45 minutes.

I bought this countertop range to use as an extra heat source for canning. It is beautifully made and might fry eggs very well. It will not bring a canner of water to a boil.

I don't have a full kitchen so I rely on these things heavily. I went through many cheaper ranges before getting this one and it has really lasted. It boils water, stays hot for a long time and is really sturdy.
I highly reccomend this burner.

I bought the PCR-1B from Amazon a few years back for use outside in the back patio. At this price, I was hoping for rugged and high performance range that can equal a single cooking surface of the indoor range. I was a little disappointed in both expectations.

The PCR-1B is durable but after a year of use, the knob already loosen and can pop out easily. The power indicator lamp cover crumbled but the light still work although slightly dimmed. The case and foots are sturdy and strong and support a large cooking pot with no problem.

The 1500 Watts power ratting does not give out heat like that of a similarly rated indoor range. Also the temperature control often cuts off power too early so that it is hard to have constant high heat level. This problem prevents the PCR-1B from being used for stir fry job. It does work fine for soup, small quick fry, deep fry or pressure cooking.

Overall, the PCR-1B is better than the low price portable electric burner but not as much as the price would suggest.

Broil King works just as advertized. This cost more than some of the other hotplates, but if you want something that gets hot enough to boil water or fry an egg, the broil king does the trick. I would say the asthetics of the unit are somewhat rudimentary, albeit commercial, the performance is great. I can dial in the exact temp I need. Being out my kitchen for a remodel the last month I've relied heavily on the Broil King for most of my cooking, it heated just as fast & worked as well, if not better than the electric stove I'm having replaced.

This hot plate costs a lot more than other cheap ones. It seems to be solidly constructed. I had it for just a month or so. I hope it will last. I bought it because my gas stove does not have a setting low enough for simmering and it works good for that. Once you figure out what setting to use for the pot and the amount of food you are making, it heats steadily. I usually use between 2 and 4. Boil the food on the stove and move it to the hot plate.

This burner works great for our canning needs. We have a glass stovetop, so we wanted another burner for canning. Can't remember the size of our pressure cooker, but it holds 8 quart sized or 10 pint sized jars. Canned green beans, corn, and vegetable soup with no problem. It took a while to get to the desired pressure, but probably not much more time than it would have on a regular stove. In our first summer using this, it met all of our needs, and we would recommend this to others.

Good full 1500 watt heat, heavy ,stable and well made.
Problem with the heat knob and no heat indicator. I was cleaning the counter around the unit and brushed against the knob turning it on. It has no positave stop off and will turn on with the slightest touch. Second - when on there is no red light to tell you it is on. result is accidental burn when touched. I am trying to think of a way for it to let me know whenn it is on (without touching)

I purchased this hotplate especially for canning, but it didn't work out. I cannot get my canner hot enough to build up the pressure necessary to can salmon. I've kept it because it works fine as an extra hot plate for buffets, but I probably should have returned it because this was too much to pay for something to just keep food warm...it would work just fine, I think, for everyday type cooking...

This range is very well designed and of obvious good quality. That is very important to me because I have just had granite counter tops installed and I need something that looks appropriate with them. I found that other small ranges made economy too great a priority.
