Book Description

October 28, 2008 Broke-Ass Stuart's Guide to Living Cheap
Why pay that hefty fee to see the Statue of Liberty up close when you can do it for free? Why shell out good money for a happy-hour hamburger when zero is your preferred price? Of course, some things in New York are worth paying for — like the city’s tastiest street food, or the smoothies from that little-known bicycle-powered smoothie machine in Brooklyn. These are just a few of the treats this book reveals for the “young, broke, and beautiful” crowd. Based on the underground hit and "Best Local Zine" (San Francisco Bay Guardian), Broke-Ass Stuart's Guide to Living Cheaply in New York gives the low-down on the best of the Big Apple’s cheap eats, drinks, buys, and more in the witty, gritty, anecdotal style that made the zine on which the series is based an underground smash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart, Funny and Helpful August 31, 2009
Format:Paperback
My mom gave this to me when I moved to NYC last year, and now the book dog-eared and covered in pencil markings. My friends love it and borrow it all the time. You can tell Stu had a lot of fun writing this. It's broken up by neighborhood and by type of establishment so it's really easy to find whatever you might be looking for. Not only funny and full of (super cheap) gems, but it makes you want to make the most of the city. Big fan, right here.

This book is funny. Yes there are a lot of f-bombs, but it's in the spirit of being a broke-a$$.

The writing is entertaining, the maps are clear, the cartoon and other asides are great. And, most importantly, Stuart knows his stuff. The man has done his research. Anyone that can tell you what days Brazen Head on Livingston Street (in Brooklyn) serves free food has got it down pat.

5.0 out of 5 stars NYC with a Great Attitude January 26, 2009
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This guide is fantastic. I've already given at as a gift to two friends who've just moved to New York--it's an excellent practical guide to the city, but it also gives you a great dose of New York attitude (in a good way). And even if you're coming here for just a short visit, this is the book to get--cut through the boring crap that other guides feel they have to cover (Tavern on the Green?!) and just get down to the nitty-gritty of real NYC. (We're all broke-[...])

And if you're too broke even to follow Stuart's recommendations, you can just stay home and read the book for entertainment. Each review is a miniature story of city weirdness/wonderfulness. Reading this book makes me happy to live here all over again...and kind of sad that I didn't have a book like this myself when I first came to New York.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good except for the cursing November 23, 2008
Format:Paperback
I now own three "living cheap in NYC" books, and this is a great one. It has lots that you don't see listed elsewhere, like the jazz record shop in Harlem with free music in the afternoons. If you can ignore the childish and excessive swearing (just about every listing includes multiple uses of the F word), you'll find lots of gems in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars indispensable! August 31, 2009
By H. Berg
Format:Paperback
Cleverly written, expertly researched-- a must have for NYC dwellers. This guide has something for you wether you're looking to explore New York on the cheap or simply to get better acquainted with what would otherwise be a daunting city. The cursing is nothing compared to what you'll hear on the subway.
