MARSHAL BARJACK Barjack was getting bored. The small town of Asininity was a mite too peaceable, and for a marshal as feisty and ornery as Barjack, that meant trouble. It looked like things might have been picking up when Barjack's old friend Happy Bonapart rode into town with a wanted prisoner in tow. Barjack was all too glad to wire ahead and claim the reward for himself. But darn if that didn't mean hed have to bring the prisoner in personally to collect the money. Barjack had no problem hopping a stage with the wanted man-AFTER all, he needed a break from the dull routine of town, and this would get him away from the missus for a while. It was only once the stage set out that Barjack's prisoner bothered to inform him that his brother and the rest of his gang would be waiting for them along the stage route...eager to see to it that Barjack would not live to ever be bored again. Conley is "in the ranks of N. Scott Momaday, Louise Erdrich, James Welch or W. P. Kinsella."

Mighty Fun, and Mighty Unusual, too.,

This was the very first of any books by Robert J. Conley that I'd ever read....and it left me wanting to read more of his work. Conley's writing is a real treat for the reader...and his work will surprise you often, and maybe even shock you now and then. If you only read traditional Westerns, and can't handle a stiff dose of reality in your books, then Robert J. Conley's work probably isn't for you. But if you're like me, and you love good Western novels, and if you are open minded and appreciate excellent writing...by all means, do yourself a big favor and check out Broke Loose....or any of Conley's books. Luckily for us, he published close to 30 Western novels.
I just finished reading another of his books, Strange Company, and it was so good I simply could not put it down....read it from cover to cover at one long, fun, sitting....and no surprise...it was fantastic. Seriously, I read a ton of Westerns, am a big fan of Louis L'Amour, Johnny Boggs, Rick Steber, Roland Cheek, Larry McMurtry, and Ralph Compton and Ralph Cotton...but hey, honestly, Robert Jackson Conley can hang with the best of them....he's that good, and then some. Check out Broke Loose, or any of Conley's novels....I just love it when I find a (new to me) author whose work I really enjoy, and this is one flat out marvelous discovery!
