Editorial Reviews

In 2007 they recorded their album "Broke, Not Broken" (Funzalo Records) at Ray Benson's Bismeaux Studios in South Austin. The album was met with critical acclaim and received airplay nationwide. The Austin American Statesman's Michael Corcoran placed the album on his top 10 list of the year as did the Village Voice's Chuck Eddy. At SXSW The Austin Music Awards named The Mother Truckers "Best Roots Rock Band Of The Year". - See more at: http://funzalorecords.com/the-mother-truckers/#sthash.uStlgzFh.dpuf

Teal Collins and Josh Zee are engaging and smart writers and singers. After seeing this group live at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, TX, I bought the CD immediately. You know how the great feeling you have when you see live music generates such enthusiasm that you just can't resist buying the CD? Then, the CD is disapppointing. Something is always missing. You can't quite put your finger on it, but it's not the same. Well, this CD does not disappoint. Whatever it is that generates that great feeling when you see these guys live is captured on this CD and I'm sure it has something to do with both the quality of writing and musicianship. These musicians are accomplished. Their lyrics are smart and insightful, the music is soulful, the harmonies are tight. I couldn't help but think of Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris when I heard Collins and Zee harmonizing.

Then, Collins belts the Chris Smithers written "Love Me Like a Man" Bonnie Raitt classic done in a great Josh Zee guitar slinging arrangement. Their influences are right, and they take the genre to a new level. This is one of the best CDs I've heard in a long while. These folks deserve support.

This CD rocks from start to finish. It is one of the best in my entire music library, which is saying a lot because almost all of my CD's are very good! Every song is good, or better! The flow from one song to the next is really good, with excellent change of tempo. If you are into contemporary rockabilly/high energy country rock, this CD is a must-have. Even if you're not, I would highly recommend it to anyone who appreciates great music.

I saw the Mother Truckers live in Austin and believe me they light up the stage. Their music never gets old no matter how many times you listen. Check out their first album as well titled Something Worth Dying For. A little rougher but so enjoyable. There's even a hidden song that will blow you away. The singing on both albums great and the guitar work is out of this world.

First I would like to say that I saw this band at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle, and even though I knew how good they would be I was still blown away.

I stumbled across these folks looking for more stuff from Josh Zee's old band Protein. I agree with the 3 previous reviewers that this is a solid album, as is their last one "Something Worth Dying For".
