Book Description

Three days before her twenty-fourth birthday, Katherine Gregory receives a letter from her deceased mother. It details a faery curse in which the eldest child in each generation will die in their twenty-fifth year.

Three days before her twenty-fourth birthday, a new love interest comes knocking, and her first love has returned - neither men are what they seem, and Katherine may have to choose between them.

Three days before her twenty-fourth birthday, Katherine must decide if this is all real, or if the strange visions she's been having are just a figment of her imagination.

The race to unravel the mystery begins, and Katherine must solve it - for any day after her birthday could be her last.

About the Author

David H. Burton was born in Windsor, Ontario to parents that instilled in him the love of the written word at a very young age. Throughout his childhood, David read relentlessly, often into the wee hours of the morning. Fantasy and Science Fiction novels have always been David's greatest vice and he has indulged in the likes of Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, Margaret Weis, Mark Anthony, J.R.R. Tolkien, George R.R. Martin, Robert J. Sawyer, Isaac Asimov, Melanie Rawn, Marion Zimmer Bradley, J.K. Rowling and for interest, some Margaret Atwood and Jose Saramago. David graduated from the University of Toronto with a major in Biology and a minor in Classical Civilization. He also dabbled in Computer Science, to which he owes his current occupation in the Telecommunications world at one of the large banks in Canada. When David isn't writing he enjoys spending time with his partner and three boys: hiking, swimming, kayaking, biking, and reading. David has a great fondness for Portuguese cuisine, good wine, and all things left of centre. Feel free to connect with David online at davidhburton.com

5.0 out of 5 stars Not your mother's romance novel ;) June 11, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Broken: A Paranormal Romance by David H. Burton

After thoroughly enjoying "The Second Coming" and the child in me falling in love with Grim Doyle in "Scourge" I was ready to kiss good-bye being a virgin to the genre of Paranormal Romance to embark on a journey with some of David H. Burton's most interesting characters yet.

If you haven't yet read a paranormal romance novel, brush aside any visions of Fabio coming out of retirement, laden with Botox, trying to seduce an alien woman with heaving breasts into some happily ever after - not in this paranormal romance anyway.

Without giving too much away, "Broken" had me hooked by the third sentence. I read through each of the concise chapters of this fast-paced narrative in one sitting!

David H. Burton made me care about Katherine Gregory, who three days before her twenty-fourth birthday receives a letter from her cold hearted, deceased mother which informs her that as the eldest child of the Gregory family, she's cursed and will not see the age of twenty-five.

Between learning of the curse and the fact that she's off her meds - seeing a little green man in her roommate's ficus tree, things might look bleak for Katherine but she's not going down without a fight!

I read Broken eleven days ago and still find myself thinking about it. I haven't passed a ficus tree or anything else lush and green without taking a second, hopeful, glance, I don't think I will for a long time to come.

3.0 out of 5 stars Twists and Turns September 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
In a departure from my normal reading genre, I purchased and read Broken. It is well written, good editing, and takes the reader along for the ride. I could see no overall objective to the story other than to entertain and that in itself is good for readers.

The second half of the book is convoluted, twisting in many directions and the readers is compelled to try and discover who are the good guys and who are the bad. They do not always jump out and ID themselves.

I would read another book by this author, since the writing is well developed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read July 18, 2011
Format:Paperback
This is a fast paced fantasy. Very original and different in the best way. Love the premise and the characters. Wish I had a Brokk of my own.

I felt, though, that the ending was abrupt. Lots of major changes happened very very quickly and I didn't feel like I was given enough time in the story to digest it all.

The various denouements were clunky, to me. The twists could have been smoother and telegraphed more expertly. The love conflict was a little muddy as well.

However, overall, very entertaining. You will read this straight through in one sitting.
