5.0 out of 5 stars Sound The Alarm!, September 12, 2010
By
This review is from: A Broken America (Paperback)
Dave and Cathy Burdick have taken the time to write down on paper (and publish) the unease many Americans feel about the state of our country. Plainly and clearly written, with data to back up their statements, A Broken America begins with the founding fathers and the purpose of government, while reflecting on the character of our founding fathers in comparison to our elected officials today. Expertly written so the reader can grasp the dire change from what was once an America for the people and by the people, to an America that is headed toward economic collapse due to greedy politicians and government spending that is insanely out of control.

A Broken America illuminates just how small the "common man" has become. While many Americans struggle to make ends meet or are completely without work, the government officials (that we elect) are well-heeled while in office, as well as out of office. Bottom line: politics pays and pays well. And, if the elected officials decide they need a bit more, they simply give themselves a raise. No, the Burdick's point out, you-the common man-have no say in the pay scales of your government. So while you beg bread and send out your resume for the hundredth time, the government cannot exactly feel your pain.

Of course, if you finally land a job and scramble to save the home for which you have worked so hard, you can bet our government has your back. Well, not exactly. The Burdick's explain how our government treats its citizen...by supporting a plan that makes repossession of a home the most profitable option from the perspective of the lender. Not exactly George Washington or Thomas Jefferson at the helm anymore folks.

While one may think A Broken America is just one more book about a crumbling nation, think again. This writing will stir your spirit and give renewed hope for America. While much of the text will make one boil with anger, there comes a time when anger kindles the soul enough for action. A Broken America will ignite a fire within each and every "common" man. If we would all realize the power in numbers, we can join forces and truly save America from corrupt government and economic collapse.

A Broken America does not leave the reader with a wish he or she could do something. A Broken America is a call to duty with specific instructions on how to take America back. This book is a must read for young people who have no concept that America is in trouble; nor of what their country was meant to be. While government works to destroy free enterprise and the American dream, thank God the Burdick's are sounding an alarm. May we all get on board.

A Broken America deserves a Sean Hannity, Dick Morris and Glenn Beck endorsement. Dave and Cathy Burdick speak from the heart and have placed into words the sadness many Americans feel as we watch what is happening to our great nation. At the same time, their words inspire us to fight for what God and our forefathers created us to be: a free people, free from oppressive government.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smart Book for Citizen Activists, October 27, 2011
This review is from: A Broken America (Paperback)
This is a insightful and clearly-written book. It starts with short bios of 3 founders of the US (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams), including their values, and the tremendous sacrifices they had to make to get this country started. Then, there's a quick rundown of the ride downhill over the past 3 decades: Reaganomics and deregulation, Clinton and NAFTA, Bush and a ballooning deficit. Finally, 5 serious problems facing the nation are explained, and some solutions proposed. The arguments are in clear, simple language, with plenty of figures and statistics you can use for talking points.

Despite the authors' hearty endorsement of the Tea Party, the problems and solutions outlined here are bipartisan, and relatively uncontroversial. That, however, does not mean that they are watered-down half-measures, either! For instance: to prevent businesses from outsourcing labor to cheaper markets, such as China (killing manufacturing jobs in the US), impose high tariffs on imported goods. Fire Wall Street fat-cats who helped cause the financial collapse. Instead of gutting social services, save hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars by cutting congressional pension plans, and replacing them with 401(k) plans (like many American workers have). Get big money lobbying out of government. Perhaps most important of all: create a "citizens' lobby" to advance the interests of average Americans in Congress!

This book comes at a time when many people, young and old, are upset about the course this country has taken. There is a lot of passion and emotion in the public at large, but not enough clear thinking and informed debate over solutions. This book can help us choose which direction to take, to create a new and better United States of America!

5.0 out of 5 stars America Needs An Overhaul, January 3, 2011
This review is from: A Broken America (Paperback)
The current state of the government and our country isn't what our founding fathers had in mind. America is in such a mess it makes one wonder how and when it will end. For anyone who isn't really sure about what's going on both behind closed government doors and right under our noses, then you must--MUST!--read A Broken America.

This book lays it all out on the line without trying to take any sides. Everyone in office is doing a bad job! I especially recommend this book to younger people and those who have buried their head in the sand for too long. This is our wake-up call, we need to take America back once and for all.

Bravo to Dave and Cathy Burdick for taking the time to write such an eye-opening and truly inspiring book. Once you're done reading A Broken America you'll know exactly what you can do to help.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Thought Out, Sound Arguments & Smart Solutions, December 29, 2010
This review is from: A Broken America (Paperback)
I think anyone living in America today can agree that things are not good, government is not what it should be and that the only ones not seeming to care are the ones that are already in office enjoying the power and perks. What I really like about A Broken America was that the entire argument from start to finish was very well thought out and sound, pulling from history and the founding of our government all the way up till present day.

I am a huge believer in offering a solution when there is something that I think needs changing, or have a gripe about. There are enough articles, pamphlets and books out there that merely list the problems but offer no real solutions, and this is entirely different. In most instances, to the problems listed, ideas for solutions are offered. However, this is essentially a plug for the Tea Party Movement and joining the movement is the ending solution offered.

I won't say that this is a total negative, but as much as I admire this for all that it is worth and as much as I do believe Americans need to take their country back, I cringe at the thought. Part of me wishes that the Tea Party could be the answer for everyone looking for a way to stand up to our government and demand that it work for us again. I am not entirely without hope though, and seeing as that is the case, I would like to see the "Party" put forward a couple humble representatives who are also educated and capable of carrying such a big responsibility on their shoulders. At the same time, I don't think the party is cohesive enough to stand together for anything yet and as a person of color I will not even get into how I personally feel about the negativity that reportedly surrounds the movements roots and members.

But back to the book, I think it is an important read for anyone and everyone today. People do need to wake up, they do need to be moved to act and defend the ideals of their country and they need to be the ones to do it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect mix between history and solutions, December 3, 2010
This review is from: A Broken America (Paperback)
This book is fantastic for anyone who wants to be abreast on the current "American" revolution currently going on throughout our society! It reads really well and is in plain language with easy explanations and chronicles the beginning of American history and how it has framed and led up to the current state of affairs we are in. Honestly, previous current affairs books I have read had history that was boring and often times irrelevant. The nice thing about this book is again the history sets up the rest of the book so kudos to the authors for researching this well and keeping the reader informed yet entertained. Another praise I would like to give is the use of block quotes. Oftentimes again in other similar publications quotes add little to the substance but in this book the quotes add to the reader's knowledge level as well as give good nuggets of information that you can keep from the reading.
When I first opened the book, I loved the fact that the "Don't Tread on me" flag is used in the beginning, which has become the symbol of the tea party. Critics of the tea party can easily be silenced by reading this book (although they probably wouldn't consider reading the book). I feel that there isn't much bias in this book; with it alluding to both political parties are to blame for the current state of affairs. The suggestions the authors use to fix some problems include advocating against career politicians, helping against outsourcing, and other common problems. Overall a very solid read and I would recommend it to someone that is interested in history or wants to take a hard look at what is going on in America.

5.0 out of 5 stars Details root causes of today's economic issues, October 27, 2010
This review is from: A Broken America (Paperback)
Things have gotten pretty confusing lately. Why did our economy bottom out? Why does it take longer to recover every time we fall into a recession? It's interesting to observe that no matter which party is in power certain interests always seem to benefit. The scope of the problem might tempt you into despair, or indifference... but that's where "A Broken America" comes in: it reminds us to keep our eyes on the ball and not on the distractions. It asks us to look at who benefits from the current situation and offers suggestions and guidance as to how we can get things turned around. Don't let the lobbyists speak for you; get involved!

5.0 out of 5 stars True call to action, October 26, 2010
This review is from: A Broken America (Paperback)
A Broken America, by David Michael Burdick, is a true call to action. It emerges at just the right time, with the eruption of the Tea Party movement onto the American political scene, to provide civic minded citizens with all the information and impetus they need to act. Going back as far as the founding fathers, Burdick explains all of the ways government has gone off track in recent years. He provides excellent insights into the historical thought processes and philosophies that went into the crafting of our political system. The book provides a good list of steps to take to influence our modern politics, just in time for the upcoming election.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Call to Arms for True Americans!, September 21, 2010
This review is from: A Broken America (Paperback)
A wonderful and insightful book about the failure of modern government in the United States. The authors detail how the common citizens have lost their voice in how our government is run in a clear and concise manner. The book explains with clear facts how we have lost control of a government our founding fathers created for the people and by the people. We no longer have any input in how our government is run and we are at the mercy of corrupt politicians whose only patrons are themselves.

To aid the citizen in fighting back, the authors point out the politicians who can be trusted to work in our best interests as well as the most corrupt politicians who need to be removed from office. This book inspires the reader to let their voice be heard and heard it shall be! A definite must-buy for any "true" American citizen. It is time to take back control of our government and restore it to the form it was intended by our forefathers. Bless America! A+

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Time To Wakeup, September 7, 2010
By
Mike Wallace (Sacramento, CA United States) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: A Broken America (Paperback)
It's a free county.

America is the land of opportunity.

Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

These are common American catch phrases, and yet we are letting these simple ideals slip away? As our economy grows shakier and our liberties are chipped away at, it is time to wake up and realize what has made this country great, and what our founding fathers intended when they created our constitution. It is time for people who are uninformed and asleep at the wheel, to wake up and unite. to take back our country before it slips away.

If you enjoy economic freedom and the choice to live your life, how you please, then it would benefit you to get informed and realize what is happening around us. Fans of the tea party and Americans in general will enjoy the message of A Broken America. It is time for Americans to unite and peacefully reset the course of this country as our founding fathers intended. If you enjoy politics or patriotism you will enjoy this book. It's time to do the right thing and A Broken America will help us get our bearings straight.
