2.0 out of 5 stars dissappointing....
I've read another book by this author-Lady Gypsy-and gave it five stars-it was a wonderful book. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for this book. From page one every character is throughly unlikable. Any romance that opens on a scene in an opium den-well that should have given me a clue. This books storyline is based on lies, secrets and a host of unpleasantness...

4.0 out of 5 stars exciting western romance, April 12, 2003
This review is from: Broken Blossoms (Mass Market Paperback)
In 1895 San Francisco Judge Chandler forces Trig Mathison to find and return to him his daughter Carleigh, who ran to Mexico to meet the mother she thought dead. Trig wants to say no, but Chandler holds the aces. Chandler will pay Trig and more important see that the phony murder rap is dropped. If Trig fails to return with Carleigh, Chandler plans to retaliate by harming his father. Trig believes the vicious man because the Judge killed his brother.

Trig catches up to Carleigh before she reaches Mexico. However, she manages to escape and continue on her trek for she needs to meet her mother whom she was led to believe by her father was dead. He captures her again and again, but finally agrees to escort her to see her mother before taking her back to her father. On the trip south together, Carleigh and Trig fall in love, but her father remains a formidable person that they will need to deal with if they are to find happiness.

This is an exciting western romance that brings to life the gay nineties from a not so elegant perspective. The story line is loaded with action as the lead couple deals with a lot more than just what her father does. Though at times the impediments to the protagonists besides her father seem too much, fans will appreciate Pam Crooks' BROKEN BLOSSOMS as love battles vengeance in the heart of the hero.

5.0 out of 5 stars Action Packed, March 17, 2011
This review is from: Broken Blossoms (Mass Market Paperback)
I was intrigued when I read the book jacket of Broken Blossoms...I couldn't wait to read more. This author details two different settings - the U.S. and Mexico - and describes them beautifully. I was drawn into the characters' lives immediately and was sympathetic to the conflicts and decisions they faced. Pam Crooks does a great job grabbing your emotions...I will be reading more by her.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unexpected gem, March 18, 2011
This review is from: Broken Blossoms (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was recommended to me by a friend and I was quite pleasantly surprised. Pam Crooks is able to draw her readers in with vivid imagery, complex characters and an action-packed plot. It is nearly impossible to put the book down due to wanting to know what will happen with Trig and Carleigh, as well as discovering the secrets Carleigh's mother holds.
This is the first book I've read by Ms. Crooks but it will not be the last.

5.0 out of 5 stars My two cents., March 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Broken Blossoms (Kindle Edition)
Another Amazon reviewer said that she didn't like how the booked opened in an opium den. That is precisely WHY I loved this book, because how cool and interesting is that?! It really took me by surprise and drew me in--no other book I can think of begins like that. Very interesting and unique.

Another thing I love about it is how historically accurate and well-researched it is. I could tell that the author put a lot of time and effort into making sure every little detail was correct, and as a history buff (especially of this time period), I very much appreciated that.

So not only was this an awesome story, but I learned a lot, too.

Thanks for a great read. A bargain if you buy it for Kindle (which I did).

I've read another book by this author-Lady Gypsy-and gave it five stars-it was a wonderful book. Unfortunately I cannot say the same for this book. From page one every character is throughly unlikable. Any romance that opens on a scene in an opium den-well that should have given me a clue. This books storyline is based on lies, secrets and a host of unpleasantness.

The hero has his own motives and the heroine is frankly a spoiled brat who wants to be treated like a queen but is extremly naive about the ways of the world.
Implausibilities abound- like fifty pages into the book the author has the two characters having sex while barely knowing more than each others names, and the hero forces his way into her room.

Simply annoying-this author can do better than this. Skip this one:(
