Book Description

February 1995
An unprecendented highest level account of Israeli war, peace, and politics, and a stern accusation about how the Bush administration intervened in Israel's internal politics, dictated its foreign policy, and abetted the fall of the Likud government.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Arens reveals details of diplomacy he was involved in as Israel's foreign minister, then as defense minister for the ruling Likud coalition during the period 1988-1992. There are two major areas of interest here: the struggle to restrain Labor leaders from granting territorial concessions to the Arabs in return for a doubtful peace agreement; the deterioration of U.S.-Israel relations because of the Bush administration's interference, led by Secretary of State James Baker, in Israel's internal affairs. Arens charges that Israel's efforts to defend itself against Iraqi missile attacks during the Gulf War were deliberately hindered, as Washington withheld economic and military aid until after Labor defeated the Likud government in 1992. Arens recounts that he saw problems looming when he was Tel Aviv's ambassador to Washington in the early 1980s: "A number of people in the White House did not share Reagan's enthusiasm and friendship for Israel." He writes broodingly about Israel being "surrounded by societies with a long tradition of fanaticism, violence, brutality, and intolerance to minorities," and conveys his fear that Israel will make so many territorial concessions that it will become undefendable. From Library Journal

As foreign minister for Israel's Likud Party from 1988 to 1990, the author worked closely with the newly elected prime minister, Yitzhak Shamir, to return the country's policies to a more conservative focus. Part of the work of that administration involved stemming what they saw as a "tide of appeasement" to liberals pushing for peace with the Arabs and accommodation with the Palestinians. Although Arens has much to say about his doubts relating to the peace accord between the Palestinians and Israel, he saves most of his venom for the United States and George Bush. Charges of consistent meddling in Israel's domestic politics, along with allegations of mendacious activity on an international level, pepper the book's pages. Recommended for large libraries with large subject area collections.

This review is from: Broken Covenant: American Foreign Policy and the Crisis Between the U.S. and Israel (Hardcover)
I bought this book thinking this was an analysis of how the Obama administration was adverse towards Israel. Instead, I found, the book is about relations under the Bush-1 administration. George H.W.Bush and his Secretery of State, James Baker were also quite unfriendly towards Israel. Arens, as an Israeli Ambassador to the USA,and the Israeli Foreign, and Defense Minister, and also having gone to graduate school (MIT) in the USA, is quite informed and knowledgable om these relations.
