Editorial Reviews

The best new band of the year. --Spin

Product Description

The San Franciscan songwriting duo Girls, comprised of Christopher Owens and Chet "J.R" White, return with the follow up with their debut entitled Album. In 2009, Girls introduced the world to a deeply heartfelt confessional album that at once channels some of the classic songsmiths of all time while demonstrating a unique sense of song-writing and production Album brought critical acclaim to ranging from placements on year-end lists, sold out shows at some of the world's most famous venues and rapturous audiences worldwide.

2010's Broken Dreams Club EP is the natural follow up to Album but introduces a massive sonic shift for the band, in their homemade studio in San Francisco with JR White at the helm. On Broken Dreams Club, we find Girls emerging with a more massive, lusher sound with horns, pedal steel and psychedelic effects dappled throughout. This EP features 6 brand new songs (a few of which that have been in recent setlists) with a running time of 35 minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives Up to the Hype November 27, 2010
By B. Rigg
Format:MP3 Music
I'll admit that Girls is a band that is hip and cool to be a fan of these days. No doubt they would sell out some venue like the Troubadour or even the Wiltern maybe. Regardless, these dudes are making excellent 60's inspired rock that is both heartfelt and aesthetically pleasing. What are you waiting for??? Come on Hipsters, eMusic doesn't have Girls anymore, so download this now!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An unconventional little masterwork December 10, 2010
By Jake C
Format:MP3 Music
Girls is the best new band of the last couple years. I say that for its consistent growth and thrilling production, but chiefly because Girls recalls a feeling too long forgotten in popular music. The sadness of our current indie champions is maudlin: the biggest album of the last few years in this scene, Funeral, which I admire, is grandly instrumented and tackles grand themes. Girls inhabits a space of far quieter, more reserved melancholy; I find it more compelling. Can you even imagine a smaller, sadder line than, "There's a voice in the back of my head that says/ you're always gonna be alone/ go turn the tv on/ and/ turn off the telephone"? I don't mean that the band is emo, but that everything they play has a compelling edge of yearning. It's beautiful.

Girls' latest EP is short and sweet, kind of like this review. There's a reason Pitchfork put this on their top album list for 2010!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Progression from Their Debut March 16, 2014
Format:Vinyl|Verified Purchase
After hearing "Lust for Life" from their debut album, I immediately became a fan of this group. When this EP was released, I purchased it without hesitation and was impressed by their musical growth. Songs like "Heartbreaker" and "Carolina" are now required listening on my playlists. If you're a fan of organic textures and unprocessed vocals, buy this album.
