5.0 out of 5 stars Movin forward!
Another great album from karsh kale! Unlike other ethno techno artists, this album has new fusion beats that sound nothing like his older albums. I would recommend this album to all old fans or those who want to explore ethnic old-school beats fused with new age cuts. tracks 2,3,5,12,4 stand out, but the rest are just as great.

I own all three of KK's solo CDs, and i recommend his work and ideas highly. If you are new to KK's work, i recommend him greatly as an artist. Whether or not you will like this CD depends on what you are looking for in a disc.

This CD veers heavily both in terms of production and in style towards being "club-heavy". If you like music to blast to 10 in your car or are trying to pump up a party, i think you'll largely enjoy this disc.

However, if you like the earlier discs because of their ability to cross genres and create/fuse ideas that meld and create exotic soundscapes and create transcendent music, i think that if you are new to KK's work, i'd recommend Liberation first and Realize second, before i'd recommend this.

For me, many of the songs on this disc lack the subtlety and nuance that you'll find particularly present on Liberation. There's not alot of depth to the vocal ideas here compared to the other discs. Liberation is very "lush" and it grew alot on me over time. Realize does a great job of straddling the line between more "pop" sounds and some great classical Indian influences and has some truly brilliant moments on it. I don't sense many truly memorable moments on this disc, it doesn't "grab me" like his earlier work has. That MAY be because the music is more oriented towards the club-goer and i am more likely to put on a KK disc while having a glass of wine with friends.

I take away one star because i find the production on this CD renders the music a bit flat. I take away a second star, because KK is an amazing talent, a talent worthy of more lofty goals (imho) than getting club-goers out there onto the dance floor. KK has the ability to get lots of amazing musicians to work together, and i was simply hoping for more experimentation than you'll find on this disc. Your mileage may vary...

This CD will remain in my collection, but its likely that if i'm going to put one of his discs on, it'll most likely be Liberation or Realize.

cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifull, March 28, 2006
This review is from: Broken English (Audio CD)
Beautifull is exactly what it claims. The rest of the record is the same. Besides one song, I just melted to the soundscapes on this record. The voices will stop you in your tracks and Kale's music and production is simply dazzling. I have his other records and love them. Whatever you do, you must get a copy of this album. MUST HAVE!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for me, March 22, 2006

I have loved Karsh's previous releases, but I did not enjoy Broken English as much as I expected to. Karsh has always had a unique style and although it is great that he experimented and changed his style since every artist should, I felt like something was lost in the translation. It is original and he achieves a multi cultural sound by blending hip hop, rock, electronica, and asian influences, but overall, I found the album to be flat. There are a few good tracks, but as hard as I tried, I just couldn't get into it and found myself bored. This album sounds too "pop" and commercial for me, but aside from that, it just didn't hold my intrest. I think a lot of people will like this album, but I have a feeling that many people, like me, will be left unsatisfied and move on to a different CD to listen to.

Expansive, exuberant, explosive--this album works a lot of genres together into a joyous, hallucinatory noise. "Free Fall" will take your head off as it explodes into space. One big "wow"!

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Direction, April 17, 2006
This review is from: Broken English (Audio CD)
I must say that I grew quite fond of Kale's original style of eastern beats and melodies over the years, but now he is taking us on another ride entirely. This is not your mommas Asian Massive. GET READY TO LIFT OFF PEOPLE!!---the mix of styles and moods are sure to break the monotiny and the blandness thats killing modern music today.

This is a beautiful album - very very VERY different from Realize and Liberation - lots of lyrics, guitars, sitars - not so ambient as the previous two albums but a wonderful blend of everything.
Hanting vocals, furious drumming, lots of collaboration - an awesome production. A must buy for any KK fan. Thank You Karsh - for delivering the album to me a week before everyone else!

This album is great!!! It is definitely different than his previous albums so if you are looking for the same style of KK's music, you are not going to get it. KK is entering new bounds with his unique styles here and makes this album is a musical journey.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!, July 20, 2006

Broken English is such an inspirational compilation. I find it more cohesive than Kale's previous "Liberation" although I personally prefer the beats of Liberation for kickin it or a running mix.

Highly recommend getting both CDs and put the mix on Random. I have kept these two CDs in my car the last month and can't get enough! The beats and grooves work first thing in the morning, or while stuck in the traffic gridlock on the way home -- I catch other drivers smiling at me moving with the beat in bumper-to-bumper.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm with the "warning" group..., November 9, 2006
This review is from: Broken English (Audio CD)
I have the first 2 K.K. cd's (I hate remix cd's) and this one is different. It's fine but it has the whole guest artist thing I find tiring. Everyone has to do a guest artist cd and a Christmas cd eventually it seems. The first 2 cd's are more instrumentally his style and this cd is a mainstream pop cd with guest artists that has his style added. You get different singers on different songs. You'll like it if that's your thing but I prefer the instrumental thing more. Just my 2 cents. Can't wait for his Xmas cd!
