Required Reading for Vets and their families,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Broken Sword (Paperback)
The Broken Sword is wonderfully written prose about a warrior, the horrors of his war, and the scars it leaves, both on the veteran and his family. And, most importantly, it is about the victory over those scars that is possible if one's heart is open and in the right place. CWO Westbrook's wordsmithing is masterful. Direct, with embleshment only where appropriate, and above all, honest. He bears his soul, faults and all, for the reader to take something very special with her or him after finishing the story. I read this book in one sitting, and found myself laughing at times, crying at others, and ultimately, having a better understanding and respect for my own father, who is also a Vietnam Veteran. I insisted that he (my father) read it as well. When he finished, he cried for the first time I can remember. And he finally believed that he was not alone, and that others could understand how he left Vietnam, but never fully came home 30 years ago. This book has brought a closeness like never before between a father and his child, Being a Veteran myself, though of more receint times, I could relate on a limited level to many of the depictions of life in a combat zone. The descriptions are full of life, and grab you, forcing the reader to live the moments of terror, and joy, and saddness, and anger. The Broken Sword is a testament for all those who did not die in Vietman, but gave their lives nonetheless. A must read for anyone who wants to understand, and for any Veteran who feel that no one can.

I met Lee Westbrook for the first time in person in a "Reunion" for his 57th Assault Helicopter Company members as a guest standing in for a friend from New York who could not make the trip at that time. I was not a member of the 57th AHC at any time. From the way the men there spoke of him I almost thought it might be in his honor they assembled from all over the country but it was a planned reunion for all that took place periodically at a different place in the country each time, I think about every 2 years or so.. Any way I know a few of his former Gunners and Crew Chiefs and from their assessment of the man knew I had to talk to him and in doing so we became E Mail contacts since that time. He was ailing at the time and in a wheel chair and though it has been many years since that in person meeting he did pass on in June of this year, 2011 and I immediately set out to get his book to read to find out about his life a bit more and to possibly share with actual members of his old companies while in the Army, him doing 2 tours in Viet Nam and was lucky enough to find a copy on Amazon.com from a vendor in New York, had a dedication in it too, hand written by Lee,"Tex" as his men called him and as I picked up on as he said, "Call me Tex" when I spoke to him or addressed him as either Lee or Mr. Westbrook in E Mails. Anyone with a Veteran for a husband or son or father should find something in this book of interest, possibly in common if Viet Nam Veteran they happen to be and it speaks from the heart of "Tex" as a man who has seen things and shared his thoughts openly without holding back mentioning his triumphs as well as anything he considered failures. The book is a fast read of 258 pages that you will end up not wanting to place a bookmark in, it holds one's interest all the way through and for me makes me sorry I never went to visit him when invited. A quote from one who flew with him went something like this, that person never read Tex's book but said this, " I would have flown into Hell with him if he needed me to "..... I will credit that quote with initials only "M.J.K." for the man that made it in case he ends up here somehow searching for the book. Anybody that flew in the wars of any era will probably find something in common in this book too, Pilots are a rare breed and stand out from the ground soldiers and with that said I recommend this Book to anyone interested in how Christianity came into a life and changed it forever too.... R.I.P. "Tex" and as one posting on your "Memorial" said, "Get the LZ ready for the others in your group who are not there yet"... I did not serve with Tex Westbrook but as fate would have it did meet him after all mentioned in his book was many years in the past and wish the best for his survivors especially his wife whom he married and stayed married to for life. As far as the transaction for the book went, ordered shipped arrived, all fast and in good shape against damage in shipment..
