Biography

“The light grows, a white flower/ It becomes very intense, like music” – (from “The Light The Dead See” by Frank Stanford).

“There was no real script,” says the laconic Rich Machin of SOULSAVERS’ extraordinary fourth album THE LIGHT THE DEAD SEE, a set of songs of majesty and momentum. “It just rolled and rolled; it was ... Read more in Amazon's Soulsavers Store

Editorial Reviews

UK LP pressing. 2009 release, the third album from the acclaimed British Electronic rockers featuring vocal and musical assistance from Mark Lanegan, Will Oldham, Jason Pierce, Richard Hawley, Gibby Haynes and Mike Patton. Soulsavers began as more of an electronic affair, with Rich Machin partnering with studio engineer Ian Glover. Their sophomore album, It's Not How Far You Fall, It's How You Land set a new benchmark, threading Soul, Gospel, Rock, Jazz and Country into the mix and a matching spread of singers. Now, you must be prepared to follow Soulsavers even further, for Broken is even better, a future classic that delivers 13 tracks of wide-ranging majesty. Lanegan handles vocals on 10 of the album's tracks, joined by many guest collaborators. V2.

Soulsavers is a blessed rock n' roll enigma. Out of nowhere the group has released another breakthrough album, Broken. Continuing their darkly ethereal It's Not How Far You Fall, It's the Way You Land, Broken soars from Ian Glover and Rich Machin's continued enlistment of Mark Lanegan's vocals, plus those of surprising newcomer Rosa Agostino. Though technically a group focusing within the electronica genre, Soulsavers excels simultaneously as a rock, neo-soul, even folk ensemble, depending upon whom the founders collaborate with from album to album, even song to song.

In what would otherwise be a typical Mark Lanegan record, I truly believe his performance on Broken has cemented his vocal skill and style on a level shared only with Tom Waits and Nick Cave. All three sing with the dark intensity and gravel-pitch of the weary, redemption-seeking sinner or castaway. The lyrics on the album, like those of these three musicians, are eerie, haunting and cathartic, evoking a Sisyphus-like salvation that's ever close yet perpetually out of reach. Though Broken is a production of Glover and Machin, it is wholly owned and mastered by Lanegan.

That being said, this album is more than just Mark Lanegan. Several tracks seem inspired by a sparse Nick Cave/Warren Ellis film score, while the others alternate between a hard, resounding electric guitar and soft piano combined with muted brass. In addition, it hosts a very powerful selection of guest performers, most notably the seductively subtle Rosa Agostino. Death Bells, Unbalanced Pieces, Some Misunderstanding, Pharaoh's Chariot, Can't Catch the Train, and Rolling Sky are epic standouts. Broken is a complete record.

Soulsavers may not be able to save our souls but they sure help make life more enjoyable by providing great art. This album that brings to mind Nick Cave's cinematic work with Warren Ellis. Lanegan's bluesy folk delivery is perfect here as well as Rosa Agostino's. Death Bells is a churning wonder. Some Misunderstanding (my favorite Lanegan song), Rolling Sky, You'll Miss me When I Burn, All the Way Down...standouts. The whole album is great. If you like Mark Lanegan you need to get this. The vocals are soulful and moving and so are the instrumentals, especially Wise Blood....... Flannery O'Connor.....They know Southern gothic.

Check this one out. You'll be glad you did....

One of the key elements of this album is the vocals of Mark Lanegan (aka front-man of Screaming Trees and on/off member of Queens of the Stone Age.)

In tracks "All the Way Down" and "Rolling Skies," Lanegan proves he can sing against more than just heavy rock and grunge textures; his creepy whisper in the latter track, paired with the vocals of Red Ghost, make "Rolling Skies" the best track on this album hands down.

Red Ghost (Rosa Agostino) also impressed me with her spellbinding and hypnotic vocals, which are present on three tracks, including the concluding track, "By my Side," which is also another favorite.

Other contributing artists include Jason Pierce (Spiritualized,) Mike Patton (Faith No More,) Richard Hawley (Longpigs,) Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers) and Martyn Lenoble (Porno for Pyros.)

After hearing "All the Way Down" I absolutely had to purchase this CD. I couldn't get that song out of my head... I was familiar with Mark Lanegan's voice from his Screaming Trees days so it was nice to stumble across him again. Some of the tracks are very reminiscent of REM's work. Then I hear shades of Pink Floyd. What a nice blend of sounds. The more I listen to this work the deeper it draws me in. With the exception of "Rolling Sky" I adore all of the music on this album.

I bought this after hearing some of the posted songs on youtube. This was a lot better than what I imagined. I am not a big fan of their most recent release. If you like Mark Lanegan, then you'll love this music.
