Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Smith, an evangelical singer and songwriter, offers Christian women her debut writing effort with both grace and candor. Smith winsomely challenges fellow Christians to be transparent in their admissions of failures, doubts, struggles and fears. To this end, she takes the lead by sharing her own emotional story of aborting her baby while in college. Years after the abortion, Smith was nudged by God to go public after hearing another Christian speaker tell a similar story. Still she battled against self-exposure because she was deeply ashamed and feared other people's judgment. Smith encourages women to seek God's grace and mercy for inner healing from past mistakes and for today's trials. Each chapter brims over with stories of women who've been there in the trenches of infidelity, abuse, widowhood and despair. Smith exhorts Christians to stop hiding behind their smiles and be brave enough to get real so that they—and others—can discover true freedom and God's extravagant restoration. (July)

Review

"Broken Into Beautiful is well-written, and although it is filled with real-life 'trauma' stories, it was refreshing to see it was also packed with Scripture, which is one of the key things God consistently used to bring those people (and continues to bring us all) through the trials He allows in our lives.
"I have already passed it on to a friend to read, and will continue to recommend it to all the women I come in contact with. It definitely has something for women of all walks and stages of life."
Peg Wildermuth

"Broken into Beautiful is truly one of the most encouraging books I have ever read. Although Gwen tackles many tough subjects and examples of broken lives, her focus is truly on the delight that God takes in mending hearts and transforming lives for His glory. The book is beautifully written, doctrinally sound, funny, touching, and laid out in a consistent, easy to follow manner from chapter to chapter.
"Thank you Gwen for your obedience to write this book and to share your beautiful Savior with a broken world. I've said it before, but will say it again: I love Gwen Smith because she loves God and now readers of Broken into Beautiful will too."
Jane Currin

More About the Author

Welcome! I'm Gwen Smith.

My goal is to encourage you to think big thoughts about God by pointing you to His truth and grace through stories, songs and Scripture.

Without hesitation: I am an unashamed, imperfect worshiper of Jesus Christ. His goodness covers my mess and purposes my days to live out the hope of the Gospel. It is my joy and passion to inspire women to live fully in Christ. How? I speak. I sing. I write books, devotions and songs. I worship. I post, pin and tweet. I am intensely in love with the Word of God and believe, wholeheartedly, that the Bible is divinely inspired truth.

Formal Me...

I am the author of Broken into Beautiful (Harvest House Publishing), co-author of Trusting God and Knowing God by Name (WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing), and am in the thick of writing a new book that I am extremely excited about (with David C. Cook Publishing). I am one of three co-founders of Girlfriends in God, a conference and devotional ministry with more than 800,000 subscribers from all across the world. I speak, lead worship and perform concerts for thousands of people annually at Christian women's events and churches. Over the years, I've shared the ministry platform with tons of "big names" - but none close to the name of JESUS. ;)

I have new songs coming out soon that were written to coordinate with my new book, I WANT IT ALL - and I'm giddy excited about them. I was a staff songwriter and worship artist for Brentwood-Benson Music Publishing from 2008-2011, have written freelance for LifeWay and Lillenas Publishing, and am now writing for Audio 31 Music, in collaboration with Sunday Best Music out of Nashville, Tennessee.

I have shared my testimony, stories and songs on such TV shows as Life Today with James and Betty Robison, The 700 Club, The Harvest Show, The Good Life, The HomeKeepers Show and Atlanta Live. Additionally, I've also been featured on many radio programs.

Not-so-formal Me...

I am a car-pooling, coffee-craving, dark chocolate lover who struggles like many with dirty dishes, messy piles, mountains of laundry, complicated relationships and cellulite. I play guitar and live to lose myself in worship at the piano. Volleyball is my sport of choice. Love. That. Game.

My family rocks my world. They are my first ministry priority. I've been married to Brad, my hunky college honey, for 22 years now. We have three cool kids, all teens, who keep us on our toes and on our knees. On most days - after homework has been done we can be found on a court, at a field, or in a gym somewhere in the greater Charlotte area. We live in sunny North Carolina and are members of Life Fellowship Church where I serve as a worship leader, occasionally teach an adult Sunday School class and where my husband serves as an elder.

Broken into Beautiful by Gwen Smith is a courageous devotional about what God can do with our broken pieces. Smith, a Christian singer and speaker, exposes her deepest secret so that the reader can come to understand the depth of God's love. When Smith was in college, she had an abortion. She knew it was wrong and deplored her own decision, but couldn't figure out any other option to get her life back. The pain and shame haunted her for years, even after she started speaking at Christian conferences, she still kept it secret until God spoke to her heart and told her of the healing he would provide her and that she could provide others if she opened up. I don't have an abortion in my past, but I have plenty of my own broken pieces, and Smith helped me to see how God can use them to create a beautiful new work in me. Smith is humble and honest, and her book is a balm to the soul.

Ever experienced feeling worthless, unlovable, used, forgotten, ugly...?

Then you've got to read this! It is written in such a way that I felt as if it were just me and a friend having coffee and chatting. I'd be rolling along fine with some chuckles here and there and then all of a sudden she would ask one of those heart searching, thought provoking questions that would bring back painful memories or reveal something I thought had been buried deep enough to not be seen or heard from again. Something that God saw me holding onto that was hindering my journey to beautiful.I was gently reminded that God is lovingly and patiently waiting on me to hand over my broken pieces so that He can transform them into a beautiful masterpiece. The scriptures and stories throughout reaffirm God's grace, mercy and faithfulness which sustained real women through some very real, very hard and personal things. From giggles to Kleenex and cover to cover I was encouraged, renewed, convicted, challenged and strengthened.

I believe God can use this book to transform women's lives and heal hearts!! Read this and you'll be reminded, as I was, that you are valued, priceless and adored! Be encouraged, be restored and then get a copy for someone you know who's broken!

As a woman whom God has transformed from broken into beautiful, I would recommend this book to all my sisters who have spent time in the pit of despair, depression, and self-loathing. This book will make you laugh one minute and cry the next. I felt as if I were having a personal conversation with several friends as I read the remarkable accounts of how each found healing and restoration through the power of Jesus' free gift of love and forgiveness. Through Him, the shattered pieces can be put back together. A must read for all who are hurting, for all who need healing from a wounded heart, for all who need forgiveness and a fresh start...that covers about every woman out there!

Gwen Smith's transparency and honesty in this book is a breath of fresh air. In a world where many women walk hiding behind their "fake" smile it was great to read a story from someone willing to take off the mask. It is an inviting testimony of God's healing in her life. Broken Into Beautiful is a wonderful narrative of what can happen when we allow God to heal our broken places.

I am not much of a reader; however, when a good book is sitting in my hands, a highlighter is usually nearby. Totally the case for Gwen Smith's book, "Broken into Beautiful." Gwen shares from her heart and you feel that you get to know her as a friend. A friend that is being used by God to encourage you through scripture and life experiences.

Gwen uses personal life lessons and struggles, Biblical examples and a ton of scripture to convey the love, the mercy, the forgiveness, the strength and so much more that God has for me and for each one of us.

My life story isn't the same as Gwen's and I'm sure your story isn't either, but we all have struggles and times we are broken. I was encouraged in a way that was not a list of "you need to do this or that" to be restored followed by failing to accomplish that "list." It was simply by opening myself to God, trusting Him, knowing Him more and His love for me. Gwen's book is definitely one to read!!!

I am so very much loving reading my copy. I am reading it VVVEEEERRRRYYY slowly - only one chapter at a time, about every week so I can let it settle in the deep recesses of my heart. Then I'll go back and read it all again, I'll probably read it then in a day or two. I am enjoying it so much more doing it this way than I usually do with a book.
This is just a wonderful book of how God takes our hurts and insecurities and re-creates them into healing and confidence. I love the testimonies that Gwen has included of others.
I love this book.

As I read Gwen's story, the word that kept coming to mind was "real." Her willingness to get real about dealing with the guilt of her past is an invitation to all of us to do the same. Gwen's conversational style and effective use of illustrations from her own life as well as the lives of other women makes this an enjoyable, easy read. The way she has used scripture throughout the narrative does more than support what she's saying... it truly makes those verses vibrate with deeper meaning.
