Book Description

Nathiel Maudin was the finest warrior the world had ever seen. His skill with the blade inspired the gods, and from each victory in the arena, a new tale was born. But at the height of Nathiel's glory the land of Nirenia received a terrifying vision of the future. It was an event heralding the death of the nation, and the arrival of a great evil. For the champion, being sent forth through time to avert it was a task worthy of legends. Centuries hence, however, Nathiel comes to learn that the world is not ready for his return… and neither is he.

Breaking free of her shackles from the depths of a jailhouse, Valaria Elaneen is convinced that freedom is a hollow thing. Her homeland is decimated, and everyone she has ever loved, gone. All that is left is to survive, and hope. But in the city of Brokentide, a stronghold ruled with an iron fist and a corrupt empress, the dangers in the shadows are fewer than those in the light. Valaria's world is then turned upside down when she inadvertently sets free a man that has the power to save her people. But should he fail, a tyrant will rise, and a civilization will be lost forever.

From the Author

The world as depicted in Legend of Shadows is an unusual place, even for a fantasy story. When Grant Costello first envisioned his tale of blades and sorcery, he wanted something fresh and new. But more than that, he wanted a beginning. An actual beginning of the fantasy genre.

The first thing that readers will notice about Legend of Shadows, is that dragons, elves, dwarves, orcs, and most other commonly recognised fantasy races have yet to be discovered... especially by the reader. Everyone loves a beginning, hence the popularity of prequels. But more importantly, there is a certain magic to first encounters, to discovering something for the first time. In legend of Shadows, this 'discovery' concept is taken one step further due to the central protagonist having lost his memory at the start of book one (Brokentide). Through the eyes and actions of the central protagonist (Nathiel Maudin), readers are subject to the wonders and mysteries of the atypical fantasy world, as though for the very first time.

1.0 out of 5 stars bad editing June 15, 2012

the storyline sounds good but once i downloaded this book the paragraphs were all broken up and not and i couldnt understand what was going on. I looked at it both on my computer and my phone and I couldnt understand how to read it right. I am not sure if it just the book or the kindle program but you cant read a book when it seems there are words missing and sentences that seem to have no meaning and pop out of nowhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful. March 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The book sounded interesting so I purcased it blind. I normally wait until there is at least one review. At first, I regretted my purchase. I soldiered on and kept reading

After a few chapters, I was hooked. I loved the characters, the dialog, the story, the action, and the intrigue. One of my favorite books of the last decade.

More please!!!!!!!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good ideas but the main character was too hesitant October 10, 2012

The world that the author builds in this book has a lot of promise; unfortunately the main character at times just seems off. He's doing things in the book in which he knows he might have to harm others and yet he constantly worries over the actions that he's come to grips with numberous prior times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cannot Wait for Book II! April 18, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This epic novel has a new twist. The hero, Nathiel Maudin, has been in stasis for 500 years and when he is awoken to save his country, the spell goes wrong and he awakens with no memory of the champion he had been. Fortunately he meets Valaria Eladeen, an assassin from his country who is intent on ending the regime of the evil Arch Empress Lailgora. Valaria helps Nathiel discover his gifts and strengths while he struggles with his conscience.

Of course this is book one, so we readers are left with several unresolved story lines at the end. Was I disappointed? No way! I cannot wait for book two. Please keep them coming, Mr. Costello!

More About the Author

Grant Edward Costello was born in Western Australia (1980), before moving to Queensland where he began his education in Bundaberg. Avidly fascinated with all things otherworldly and make-believe, film and literature was a mainstay throughout his earlier years, and art quickly became the output for a growing wealth of inspiration and blossoming ideas. In the closing months of Grant's schooling, he put the paintbrush down in favour of literature, for within the written word he found a limitless playground, one where he could expand from static imagery to a broader medium of expression.

Grant's first story took the form of 'Aconite', a screenplay script that was faithfully recreated into a comic book format, and was then depicted in a short film at the Morningside Institute of TAFE. Grant's second project; 'Winter Realm', was his first ever novel, and it was a young adult science fiction/fantasy that was a collaboration of genres mixed into a post-apocalyptic epic. During the writing of 'Winter Realm', Grant experienced his first taste of Fantasy and its limitless potential. Hence came 'The Demonthrone', a story that was sadly never completed, mainly due to the emergence of a more vivid and ambitious idea, one involving deeper characters, fast-paced action sequences, and a narrative that contained a strong socialism theme, and also dealt with issues like autocracy and prejudice. That story was 'Brokentide'; a bold first chapter in the upcoming 'Legend of Shadows' series. With a passion for Fantasy driving his every written word, Grant's ultimate desire is to contribute something truly original and noteworthy to the world of storytelling.
