Book Description

June 15, 2004
The poems of Charles Fletcher Lummis, gathered together in this volume, A Bronco Pegasus, vividly reflect the adventure, enterprise, and experiences of an exceedingly eventful life. Lummis' only collection of verse includes poetic tributes to Thomas Moran, Mary Garden, John C. Fremont, Schumann-Heink, John Burroughs, John Muir, Theodore Roosevelt, Bob Burdette, and Geronimo, as well as a chilling parody of Poe's Annabel Lee entitled Cannibalee. Although Lummis was a great champion of Western Literature, he was a mediocre poet himself, and this work perhaps best serves as a poetic touchstone to inspired moments in Lummis' own life. With the manuscript completed in late October of 1928, a bound copy of the finished book was air mailed to Lummis by his publishers less than a month before his death on November 24. Charles Lummis (1859-1928) was an author, journalist, editor, photographer, Los Angeles city librarian, adventurer, close friend and Harvard classmate of Theodore Roosevelt, and champion of the American Indian. He walked from Cincinnati to Los Angeles in the winter of 1884-1885 to accept a job on the then three-year old Los Angeles Times.
