Book Description

One unexpected pregnancy is a drama; fifty thousand is citywide hysteria.

Cursed with endless drowsiness, Enchantress Hiresha sleeps more than she
lives. Since she never has had a chance to raise a family, she
sometimes feels like every woman is pregnant except for her.  This time,
she is right.

From virgin to grandmother, all the women in her city have conceived.

A lurking sorcerer drains power from the unnatural pregnancies, and
Hiresha must track him by his magic.  Unfortunately, her cultured
education in enchantment ill equips her to understand his spellcraft,
which is decidedly less than proper.  The only person uncivilized enough
to help is the Lord of the Feast, a dangerous yet charming
illusionist.  Associating with him may imperil Hiresha's city, yet
refusing his help will allow the sorcerer to leech godlike power from
the mass births.

"An impressive and admirably unique piece of fantasy fiction." -- Fantasy Book Review

"Marling is a fantastic writer." -- BookWormBlues.net

From the Author

"If Jane Austen collaborated with H.P. Lovecraft to write a High Fantasy, the resulting creation might bear a striking resemblance to A.E. Marling's Brood of Bones." - Dr. Frankenstein

"The protagonist is a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Liz Lemon, though decidedly better dressed." - Prof. Moriarty

"So good I ate my hat!" - Mad Hatter

5.0 out of 5 stars Original high fantasy, extremely well-written! October 1, 2011
By Dean
Format:Kindle Edition
No idealized two-dimensional fantasy heroines/heroes here! If you want high fantasy about fascinating, flawed characters set in a deliciously complex world, read this book. Funny and dark by turns, and completely satisfying without ever being cliche, Brood of Bones proves that one can expect excellent writing and characterization from the fantasy genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful "Brood" October 16, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Unfolding the layers of a new fantasy world without tripping up the action is deftly accomplished in this well-crafted story. It could cross-genre into Mystery and Suspense. The urgency of uncovering what's made all the women pregnant, the wonderfully creepy Feasters and the Lord of the Feast, the delicious characters and the machinations of magic are terrific. Add to that an enchantress who can't stop herself from falling asleep, plagued by her own griefs and challenges. It's worth a read, a re-read, and many more thereafter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! October 6, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
This is one of the best fantasy novels I have read in years. The level of detail that A.E. Marling has put into creating this universe, and more specifically the characters, is just astonishing. The main character, Hiresha, is everything that I love in a strong, competent, intriguing female lead, and I truly hope to read more of her adventures.

I stayed up all night reading it, and have been in a daze thinking about it since. I don't think that's just sleep deprivation. This is an absolutely fantastic novel. Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
This story has a very interesting premise. It was too drawn out in my opinion. Overall I can't really review this. Will leave you to draw your own conclusions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Narcolepsy FTW?
This is a very original book. The world is unique and well-thought-out, as are the magical systems. The characters are generally plausible and well-described, through the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and different
Very different world. Sympathetic character and interesting love story. Not the usual fantasy, villains galore, peculiar love story and a surprise ending

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting story line
I really liked this book. The plot is a bit unnerving about the pregnancies, the main character is a bit aloof, but overall I enjoyed the story and characters. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Tooo far out in the science fiction genre for me.
I read @ 20 pages, but it's too violent and other-worldly for me. I'm in my sixties, but the younger readers may like it.

The book moves pretty slow. Like really slow - I thought it was pretty disjointed and many of the underlying concepts/knowledge about the world aren't explained well. Read more
