More About the Author

I was born in Brooklyn the same year Einstein died and Disneyland opened. I've always thought these facts were important! I spent my weekly allowance (25 cents) on penny candy from Cockey Louie's candy store. I dug in empty lots with spoons. I stayed out on long summer nights playing "Red-Light, Green-Light." There were all kinds of characters around in those days; "Blackie", "Mushy Tushy", "Stick Legs", "Couth", and we were all on the streets all the time, surrounded by old people on their folding chairs, or leaning out the windows, their elbows on pillows.

I wrote BROOKLYN VALENTINE as a tribute to the town I was born and raised in and the people I knew there. I left Brooklyn very reluctantly in 1993 (that's another story) and moved to Westchester County, where I nearly failed the entrance exam! (I did not own a blue Volvo wagon, or one article of clothing from Eddie Bauer. In fact I had never even HEARD of Eddie Bauer!)

As I wrote my book, I was happiest when I went back to Brooklyn so I could describe the places in the book accurately. For readers who have never been there, I hope my book gives you the feel of a travelogue.

When I got the book I was going to read it after the book I am currently reading. I skimmed the first page and then thought I will just read a couple of pages, and then ended up reading the whole book over a weekend. I found the book to be charming and funny. Someone has to make a movie of it. The dialogue is already all there and moves you along swiftly. The characters are endearing - you would want to know them. To me Brooklyn was the place I ended up if I dozed off on the 6 train and forgot to get off at Bowling Green. This book made it come alive.

I also loved the illustrations - a treat in an adult novel. And the cover art really sets the tone and becomes so much more meaningful after you have read the book. You just have to look at the cover to bring back all the little scenes and enjoy them all over again.

This book is a great find if you want something light hearted as well as heart warming.

So many delightful surprises stirred into this warm, warm story, which brings together a diverse cast of appealing, well-drawn characters who weather their storms and share their loves and joys in the charmingly described neighborhoods of Brooklyn. Insightful and fun perceptions about the man-woman scenario, too. Ms. Levine does an amazing job of getting into men's heads and hearts (and women's, too!). A story to savor!

This book is a real valentine. It speaks to love at all levels - between a man and a woman, a father and a son, between friends, and a man for his city. The characters are all precious and real - I fell in love with all of them, even when they sometimes made me mad. I didn't want to put it down while I was reading it and I was sorry when I finished it. I want to know more about these characters. Rachel, write a sequel!!

Brooklyn Valentine is lots of fun. Levine tells a good tale and the reader learns about the "inside Brooklyn". It's very engaging, the characters are well developed and I loved the dialog. The illustrations are fun to look at as well.

My sister Rachel wrote this book. I purchased it not realizing how much I would enjoy it. I laughed at some parts, cried at other times.I loaned the book to a few friends & they also loved it
