4.0 out of 5 stars 3.75 Stars! Solid But Underwhelming!
Tanya Morgan is the internet darling group because they all met online, formed a group, and have been successful. It's a nice story, but ultimately I think it shades people's views of the group.

They come with a similar vibe as groups like Little Brother, mellow - jazzy throwback beats mixed with a straight forward conscious rap style.

If that's...

3.0 out of 5 stars Strong follow up
So, imagine you are a rap trio that had one of the year's best slept on albums of 2006. What do you do next? You come with the same great formula that made their first CD a fantastic listen.
While Brooklynati isn't a 4 star that Moonlighting was, the boys from Brooklyn/Cincinnati still bring sharp lyrics and great beats. Having dropped the same week as Busta and...

If that's what you love then you will love Tanya Morgan and this CD especially. It's a nice album and I commend them for having this chemistry and cohesive sound considering how the group came about.

That said, for me personally, this formula starts to wear thin on the album and get a little repetitive. If they would have just cut say 3-4 of the weakest tracks off the album then you'd be dealing with a more potent product. Still a very good CD for the 2009.

5.0 out of 5 stars Original and dope. Best album of 2009., November 1, 2009
This review is from: Brooklynati (Audio CD)
The more I listen to this album the more its brilliance becomes apparent. It is very original, so it's sound never tempers. Von Pea and Brick Beats are spectacular on the production. They use some great samples and instruments; they are chill and knockin' at the same time. A sort of uplifting sound to the album, which complements the theme of community. All the MCs spit dope and have a good chemistry/passion. I really like this album and it is my favorite out of the 30 or so albums I have bought this year. 9.53/10

Finally an album you dont feel regretful about spending your hard earned money on. Hands down the most refreshing listen of the year. Anyone who likes artists such as Jurassic 5, De la Soul, ATCQ, Organized Konfusion, Little Brother, etc. should check this one out. Production handled by Von Pea, Brick Beats, and Aeon. All the tracks are on point and the lyrics are witty as well. Each member has there own distinct voice and style so it never gets boring. A shout out to Tanya Morgan for representin' real hip hop. DONT DOWNLOAD IT, BUY IT.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!! They still make Hip-Hop this FRESH!?!?!, May 21, 2009
Oh my god yes...oh my god! These famous words from Busta Rhymes in the classic Tribe Called Quest joint "Oh My God" were my sentiments after hearing this from start to finish for the first time. And after another 20 or so listens, I still feel the same way! This is seriously a certifiable CLASSIC Hip-Hop album in every respect: Dope beats, rhymes, concept, skits, even the layout of the inlet! Classic! The dudes of Tanya Morgan have crafted a concept album so solid that De La Soul would be proud! To say these 3 dope boys are influenced by the likes of De La Soul would be an understatement as they bear a lot of resemblance to Hip-Hop's perennial innovators. They're not bitin' De La's style, just using their blueprint for innovation!

Simply put, there is not 1 throwaway cut on here! Straight up and down solid material. This is such a rarity that I now have this in my 5 disc changer next to De La Soul is Dead, Midnight Marauders, Word...Life and Stress: The Extinction Agenda!

The whole concept of BrooklyNati makes sense; These guys are making music so unlike the Hip-Hop of today that they needed to create an alternate universe for people to even comprehend the greatness of their music. Anyone fed up with the current state of wackness in Hip-Hop should take a trip here as everything is lovely in BrooklyNati!

5.0 out of 5 stars The return of Tanya Morgan, April 5, 2010
This review is from: Brooklynati (Audio CD)
In 2009, the trio Tanya Morgan released the follow-up to their debut "Moonlighting" with their sophomore effort "Brooklynati"- named so for the group members hometowns (Brooklyn, New York and Cinncinati, Ohio, respectively). On this album, they approach hip hop from the perspective of grown men, as evidenced on the song "Plan B" in which the members take on the identites of men who once dreamed of stardom, but have settled comfortably into real life. They also confront shady concert promoters in the song "Don't U Holla", and mock early 90's hip hop with the parody "Hardcore Gentlemen". They mourn the loss of hip hop personified as a woman in "She's Gone AKA Without You" which features Phonte of Little Brother, who Tanya Morgan is often compared to. In short, this album is a must have for any serious hip hop head that loves music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cincy stand up!, October 1, 2009
This review is from: Brooklynati (Audio CD)
Wow I am almost embarassed to have not heard of this group living in the OH and following the underground scene. I actually read a review in Spin magazine of all places and decided to give it a try and wow was I impressed. This album is straight heat. Bouncy hip hop beats with smart lyrics all the way through. OF course my favorite cut was the one with Blu on it. Everything that boy touches is gold and this was no exception. True hip hop buy it now, support real hip hop death to the Southern ringtone rap.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice!, June 16, 2009
This review is from: Brooklynati (Audio CD)
What an impressive sophomore release from these Okayplayer alumni. Production and lyrics resound with the true school element most notable during the early '90's era. Each lyricist has their own unique flair and distinctive voice and they don't rely on cheesy hooks or annoying adlibs to appeal to the lowest common denominator "rap" fan of today.

As a former Okayplayer myself, I'm proud of these cats. As much as I try to convince myself that Hip-Hop is dead, something like this comes along and smacks me back to reality.
