BearManor Media presents "BROOKLYN'S SCARLETT SUSAN HAYWARD:FIRE IN THE WIND" (Paperback), by Gene Arceri (Author). This is a well crafted book on one of Hollywood's favorite starlets, Miss Susan Hayward. Many behind the scenes gives us the feeling we've known her during her life here on this planet.

Found myself not wanting to stop reading this book, talk about a wonderful human being thinking of others before herself. Knew she was a great actress, but this sheds more light on her persona and career with such positive vibes. The cover art captures her inner and outer beauty, with that certain twinkle in her eyes that made you melt.

Gene Arceri gives the readers behind the scenes anecdotes, which most of us fans and collectors die for. The weaving of her personal life and career gives a scenic pattern to this beautiful tapestry of a loving and caring woman. Much detailed accounts by the author.

* Love the quips that appear before each chapter, here are just a few:
Chapter 2: -- "This I was born with: an imagination and a natural talent for lying. The perfect ingredients for an actor.

Chapter 3: -- "If I were starting out in this day and age, I don't think I would choose an acting career. The motion picture has all changed so tremendously, I think I'd be much more attracted to a career in something like archeology or geology. Acting, no!

Chapter 4: -- "Some People have to be constantly amused, I don't. I don't have to be surrounded by people or "entertained".

Chapter 5: -- "I have no interest in gossip. I think people who repeat tales about other people should have their mouths taped"

Chapter 6: -- "John Wayne is my favorite leading man all time. Why?

Being from Carrollton, Ga and knew Mrs Chalkey and was a friend of Tim, I found the book a decent read but has several inaccuracies and the "Index" references in the back do not correspond to the page number in the text. Ie: If you look for "Tim Barker" the Index tells you page 71 when it is actually page 76. I think they are like 3 or 4 pages off. Also, Her Florida years, after Chalky's death, and her last days seem a little too much "Hollywoodish". All-in-all it is worth the time to read it.

Susan Hayward did much to capture the imagination of many throughout her career. "Brooklyn's Scarlett: Susan Hayward: fire in the Wind" traces the life and career of Susan Hayward from a devoted fan and PBS talk show host Gene Arceri who gives readers anecdotes from those who knew her as well as her own research. "Brooklyn's Scarlett" is a moving and remarkable read about a star of the golden age of television and film, highly recommended.

Even with the typos mentioned by another reviewer, this is a very well-done book which recalls the life and career of actress Susan Hayward. Containing input from both friends and family, this book abounds with personal recollections about the fiery redhead from those who knew her best while placing a lot of emphasis on Hayward's spiritual life which she embraced later in her life.
In many ways, the reader is presented with a tempestuous lady who fights a lot of personal demons and ultimately prevails in making her own peace.
I was particularly impressed with Hayward's stoicism when she was striken with the cancer which eventually claimed her life. I remember her last public appearance at the Academy Awards when the news of her imminent demise was being tracked by the media. Preparing for that appearance was a herculean task, but with the help of a wig and make-up and pure fortitude Hayward managed to pull off the impossible and created a wonderful last memory for her friends and fans.
Having read Mr. Arceri's previous book on Hayward, I thought this book was better in the respect that it was far more personal because of the anecdotes from those she was close to. Hayward seemed far more human and was easier to relate to than a lot of celebrities who have been subjects of recent biographies.
This is a great read for any fan of the actress. I also really liked the beautiful cover art which captured Hayward's vivacious personality.

Brooklyn's Scarlett is far more than a biography. It is a compelling exploration of a remarkable woman's determination to succeed in her career---and to find the peace that was so elusive in spite of her awards, her family, and the men in her life.

In researching this thoughtful and thorough book, Mr Arceri conducted many interviews associated with Susan Hayward
including her brother Wally, Father Thomas Brew, a Roman Catholic priest who became a close friend, and Cleo Miller, who worked as a personal housekeeper for Susan from 1953 to 1957.

Although I found Ms Hayward's behaviour unsettling at times, by the end of this remarkable book, I had become a real "Fan." Now I want to go back see her films again so that I can see this star at her very best. "Brooklyn's Scarlett" is a must read even if you are young enough not to remember the legendary and unforgettable star, Susan Hayward.
