Neutral running shoe that rocks,
By Lloyds "The Family" (South Jordan, UT) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brooks Men's Glycerin 8 Running Shoe (Apparel)
This shoe was made for neutral style running. I pronate slightly in my left foot which almost disappears as I pick up the pace. So when I have too much arch support or not enough my knees will either ache on the inside or outside depending on which support extreme I'm running with. Especially after any distance more then 4 miles. After trying many different shoes in many different brands, I have found the Glycerins to be the best for me. I use these to train and race in from sprint triathlons to marathons. They are moderately light and last a really long time. Mine are size 10.5 and weigh in at 13.15oz. The last pair I had lasted over 500 miles and nothing fell apart on them. I've had shoes in the past were the sole would disconnect from the toe or the upper would rip. This doesn't happen with Brooks, they are very well constructed and worth the investment. And I love the black and yellow color scheme.
I also own the new Brooks Men's Launch Running Shoe which are lighter, exceptionally fast and fun to race in and they don't aggravate my knees either.

Try Before you BUY!!! But They Rock!,

I purchased my pair at a local shoe / camping / cycling / everything outdoors store (guess which one!). But I felt it wise to put my two cents in here. I tried on 13 pairs of shoes. Seriously. I have used Asics for a long while and am partial to the brand. Trying these on next to the Asics Gel Kayano, you can really tell a difference. The Asics seem to have a little bit too much plastic and feel odd. (Yeah the Kayano is a support shoe as I found - seems that some periodicals have them covering neutral runners also).
For a neutral running shoe it doesn't get much better than this. The shoe is light and responsive. So far I have put over 100 miles on my pair and they feel good as new. I run 7-9 miles every day so durability is important. If I am having a sore knee day I switch to the Brooks Ravenna. But seriously, try a pair on somewhere to gauge the sizing accurately. You will be glad you did. Update 3/2011: As mentioned in my comment: I use neutral shoes 90% of the time, but an IT band issue last spring forced me to ease back into running. I went with the Ravenna for awhile until my natural stride resumed. I would use them on sore knee days (they have about 300-400 miles) so that I don't unthinkingly adjust my stride to ease off the left knee and over pronate. I also purchased a pair of Brooks Launch and Saucony Kinvara and love them. The Ravennas have since been retired. The glycerin are still in my rotation and used for outdoor pavement running.

I have had these shoes for about 3 weeks now. I run on average 12-15 miles per week. I am in the military so needed a good shoe to take our bi-yearly physical fitness test. I am 6'3" and 220lbs. I also have a high arched and wide foot. I also have had ACL/PCL/MCL surgery on my knee. Was really looking for something with extra cushion and good for a long (3mile or more) ride. I had been using NB shoes since they came in 4E size. I bought this shoe in 2E. Its a little tighter than the NB but the ride more than makes up for it. Even in 2E vs 4E it is a very comfy shoe. I took 20-30 seconds off my 3 mile time immediately. The shoe is much softer with a great cushion than the NB. It is a huge improvement. I am also less tired after the run now but maybe that is a mental thing. I can honestly say this shoe is a 75% improvement that I can physically feel on my runs. If you are "bigger" with a high arch and looking for a cushioned ride, this one is for you.

Perfect Shoe,

After deciding to take up walking and realizing my usual $20 Wal-Mart shoes wouldn't do I started doing some research. I actually took the time to learn about different brands and went to a shoe store to have my feet and gait analyzed. The Glycerin 8 was one of the shoes the lady brought for me to try. I had read good things about the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 10, but it is a stability shoe, and what I needed was a more cushioned (neutral) shoe for my type of foot. WOW, are these shoes FANTASTIC! They are soft and springy without being overly so and make me WANT to walk as much as I can each day. It's really nice to know that shoes can make your feet feel so good.

The Brooks Glycerin 8 has been out for awhile. It's the first shoe to incorporate the new DNA technology also found in the Trance 10 and Beast/Ariel models as well. The shoe looks great. Brooks pays attention to detail and just holding on shoe in your hand you begin to see all the small detailing incorporated into this running shoe. This is their top of the line for neutral runners. I'm a bit spoiled as the Trance 10 which is their top of the line shoe in any category has a bit more cushioning and stability. I generally have a neutral gait. However I weigh about 240 lbs and the extra cushioning in the Trance 10 just feels better to me. The Glycerin 9 will likely be out later this year and likely will add some cushioning and stability and make it a contender as the best neutral running shoe made. I did not want to wait for the 9th edition. Again I have other reviews on ASICS , Nike and New balance running shoes. It's nice to have the DNA technology in this shoe but it's a bit overhyped. No better than ASICS gel technology which has been out for years. I still prefer the ASICS gel Kayano 17 over all other running shoes at any price. But I really like this shoe. It's got decent cushioning and good energy return. Your foot feels closer to the ground than with the ASICS. This shoe required a 4 mile run to get them broken in. At first the heel well felt like its was creating friction on my foot and there were some other little minor irritations on the front end of the shoe as well. After the 4 mile run I felt none of it. The shoe adapted perfectly. Heel cup is good and no issues on the front end. The upper materials are the best on any shoe I own. The midsole provides good shock absorption and compliments the DNA gel like material. It feels as though your being propelled forward as you run. Unless you have a significant pronation problem you really can't go wrong with this shoe. Brooks is doing their homework and putting out top line running shoes with well researched technology. I highly recommend this shoe. I took out the stock insole and put in a SOLE Dean Karnanze signature footbed as I do with all my running shoes. I believe this shoe will last a good long time. Sizing was not a problem. I always buy 1/2 size larger and the 2E width. Bottom line this shoe is well worth the money. I can't wait for the Glycerin 9 but for now I'm quite pleased with the 8.

a great shoe...I have a pair of brooks in the exact same size and similar style from a few years ago and these were my fav shoe...these glycerin stack up nicely against the old ones and are very comfortable. They are a little narrower than my old brooks and I have a narrowish foot...I recommend that you try on some brooks in a shop before jumping in as the size is deceiving.

Comfortable Soft Cushioned Supinator Running Shoes by Brooks,
By EleganzShopper "EleganzShopper" (Santa Cruz, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Brooks Men's Glycerin 8 Running Shoe (Apparel)
These are very comfortable shoes to walk in. They are designed for supinators (or underpronation) (one's whose heals wear on the outside edge of the heal; not the inside (protonator.) I find these shoes stable and easy to walk in on. I walked on asphalt, gravel, redwood leaves, cement sidewalks all easily up hill, downhill and on level ground; even while the ground was wet. I don't run much; but I do occasionally sprint and the cushion feels great. I bought these shoes mainly for comfortable walks on the sidewalks. I have another pair of shoes for the off road trails. The heel is cushioned well; best I have felt. I also like the cushion on the ball of the feet and under the tongue. I did order a half a size larger than my usual dress shoe size and a narrow as I have narrow feet. They fit perfectly well. They are flexible just enough and firm just enough.

My husband purchased a pair of these at a speciality shoe store for twice the price as I purchased his second pair on Amazon. A great shoe at half the price of retail!! Husband claims these are the best shoes he has ever owned.

I love these shoes! They are very comfortable, have great cushioning, and have kept my knees from hurting. I weigh 195 and am tall so I need to change them about every 300 miles. I really like the Glycerin 9's too with a little extra cushioning in the fore sole.
