Like running on marshmellows, July 14, 2010
I absolutely love these shoes. I run up, down and around the mountains in the Phoenix area. These are the best shoes I have worn so far. My knees were taking a beating going up and particularly down on rather large rocks. The first time I wore the Cascadia 5 I kept waiting to feel a jolt of pain in my knees but it never happened. Then when I got on the trail I found myself long-striding without even thinking about it. I have shortened my stride considerably over the years due to knee pain, but found myself taking longer and longer strides. In the end, I cut my time considerably thanks to these shoes. I have run up and down on all types of terrain...rock, packed dirt, loose dirt, gravel, and cement and these shoes have handled all surfaces equally well.

This review is from: Brooks Men's Cascadia 5 Trail Running Shoe (Apparel)
Living in Afghanistan has its disadvantages. Of course there is being in a war torn country and needing to carry a weapon everywhere you go, but lets not call me Mr. Obvious. Other disadvantages are trying to run without getting blown up, but if you have set up a perimeter well enough that the base is "relatively" safe, the next challenge is running without rolling your ankle. We like to make our roads with just rocks and then more rocks. little rocks and BIG ROCKS, and you cannot get away from them. I already have a hard time walking around, let alone running. So after painstaking, finger nubbing and blood shot eyes from lack of sleep research of a whole 12 mins. (thank you Amazon, your awesome) I completed my task. I finalized my decision on these "belt" matching(inside Army joke)shoes.
I have put about 20 miles into them and they feel pretty damn good. No problems with running except the occasional loose slip every now and then, but I haven't rolled the ankle. the sole is pretty meaty and grips the ground really well. they are stable under the feet as long as I keep my balance above my feet and not get sloppy on my running stance. Additionally, feeling the ground (as most like), not to shabby there either. Gives me a since of a "split second necessary adjustment" feel when needed, if you know what I mean.
I've been a "love you long time" to nike. Cannot say that anymore. Sadly, feeling like I had a "seven year itch" I have cheated on Nike and I liked it. These shoes are pretty amazing and I don't know if I can go back, at least when it comes to trail shoes. I look forward to challenging them in the warrior dash and the muddy buddy this year. I took a leap of faith on these bad boys and I am glad I did. Brooks did a pretty good job on these shoes. I just might get a back up pair, so there isn't a gap of time waiting for the next.
If you like running and you like trails, these Cascadias will not let you down.
my only beef? double knotting the laces is a must. yes, one knot doesn't cut it, they will loosen after awhile for you marathoners.

First pair of Brooks, December 29, 2010
I was reluctant at first to run in these shoes as I run primarily on the road with little to no trail work (these are trail shoes). Every review I read of them was glowing and went on and on about how they were a very road friendly trail shoe. They were right. First day out of the box, I logged 10 road miles in them. They performed wonderfully, no problems with cushioning, stability, or overheating (my biggest concern with these).
In addition, they are the most environmentally friendly running shoe that I am aware of with the midsole taking only 20 years to breakdown in the landfill instead of the industry standard 1000 years.
I highly recommend these shoes and will definitely purchase another pair when they need to be replaced.
