Book Description

Can a good Witch and a brooding Vampire find true love? Especially when the whole world is against them?

The threat of war between Witches and Vampires means England may no longer be safe for a young Witch. Hence, Miss Violet Popplewell is sent abroad under the watchful eye of her great-aunt Vera. Without so much as a bon voyage party, Violet finds herself a visitor to the city-state of X, a mysterious place where magic is used openly and Witches and Vampires live together in harmony. Or at least, they try to get along. Violet’s aunt is shocked to discover that there are Vampires staying at their pensione and alarmed to note that one of the undead is a rather handsome young man.

An outburst of hostilities in X thrusts Violet into the young Vampire’s arms. And, much to her dismay, she realizes she may have accidentally bewitched him with a love charm. Are the emotions that the Vampire feels true passion or just a slip of the wand?

Things I don't like:
1) Stories about Vampires (What? They're overdone)
2) Stories with love at first sight (Does this need any explanation?)
3) Stories where the POV shifts around between characters a lot without a clear break between them.
4) Pride, Prejudice and Zombies (couldn't get into it).

I still loved this story. Probably because I love Forster's "Room with a View". Normally, I don't think these parodies work, however, this parody augments, rather than ignores Forster's main theme of choosing love over stifling convention. In this story--consciously or not--magic, and people who have magic either innately or through their lovers, is code for people who follow their hearts.

Also, the fight scenes were more gripping!

This story is silly in the best possible way--consciously, and with a good heart behind the silliness.

5.0 out of 5 stars The girl with something extra! December 12, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
It was nice coming across a book that didn't dwell solely on vampires! Yes, there are vampires in this book, but it was great to have a witch as the protagonist for once! Although Violet is a smart and resourceful young witch, I think a lot of young women will be able to identify with her character. Sure, one could write this off as another romance novel wrapped up in supernatural clothing, but Gayla Twist writes in a much more interesting style than a lot of other authors who write in this genre. There is a warming and a knowing humour that permeates her work and that makes all the difference in the world.

I'm writing this review during the holiday season and feel this would make a great gift. I am planning on gifting a couple copies to my nieces who don't live in town.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Fantasy Book December 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I recently had the opportunity to review Gayla Twist's new book 'Broom with a View'. This book is a little different than what she is normally known for writing as she co-wrote it with Ted Naifeh. This book still keeps to her vampire roots, but has more to do with witches, warlocks, and other mythical creatures. It has a refreshing change from the human falling for the vampire (which is a fantastic story), and gives the reader a little more into a mythical, magical world.

When Violet Popwell is sent to live in the city-state of X, accompanied by her great-aunt Vera as her caretaker, they find themselves staying in a land that thrives on magic. This land is accepting of all magical creatures even the likes of vampires. When the two woman realize that they are staying in the same pension with the Count Du Monde and his son Sebastian, it lead to an uneasy feeling in Vera. When the onset of the vampire/witch war falls onto the city of X, Violet finds herself in the arms of the young Sebastian and believes she puts him under a love spell by accident.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've read in a while December 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is excellently plotted and written. I love the characters, the world, and the twists of the story. It was sweet, charming, funny, and entertaining from start to finish. Like a lightly written Jane Austen novel with witches, vampires, a magical war, and some espionage thrown in. Don't miss this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars It definitely is a must read. December 15, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It is a honestly one of the best books I have read in very long time. It is smart and witty and keeps you guessing. It is super intriguing as you are trying to figure out what is going on. The characters are interesting, every single one of them you run across, even of they aren't the best of people. I spent a lot of time asking myself "wait, what?" and that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Its such a whirlwind of an adventure, each page is just as exciting as the last. The shift in POV is also refreshing. Generally a hard technique to use, but somehow it worked out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally enjoyable December 20, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. I could relate to Violet's struggle with her kooky aunt, family secrets and a love that her family didn't approve of. This was a well written and unique book. Highly recommended by someone who reads a every day or day in a half.

More About the Author

Birth of the Vampire ~ Book 1 in my new series The Vanderlind Realm ~ is launching June 1st!

I love to read. If I had to choose between only ever being able to read or watch tv again as my entertainment, I'd choose reading with only a slight hesitation.

The idea for Call of the Vampire came to me from my subscription to A Word a Day. The word that day was "Aurorean" - of or belonging to the dawn - and I thought, "What a lovely name Aurora is for a vampire." But then I thought, "No, Aurora is the name of the girl the vampire loves." Call of the Vampire pretty much wrote itself after that.
