3.0 out of 5 stars "Princess Diaries" less royalty plus magic
Rachel is 14. She lives on Manhattan and worries about boys, clothes, and school -in the same order. Things stop being normal when Rachel discovers that her mom and young sister are witches and have magic abilities. Could she use it to her advantage? Even better, could she have these abilities?
The book is fun and easy reading for tweens and teen girls, with magic...

Goody-to-shoes Miri doesn't want to use her powers but when Rachel talks her into using magic to break up their dad and soon to be step mom all bets are off. Soon Miri is cooking up clear skin concoctions and potions to help Rachel dance so she can be in the schools Fashion Show. But soon the Fashion Show and being part of the A-List take over Rachel's life and she starts to forget what's really important.

This is Sarah Mlynowski first teen novel and she doesn't disappoint. Despite the supernatural aspect, Rachel is your typical freshmen just trying to fit in. The book is filled with humor and laugh out loud moments that keep you entertained. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars When is she coming ot with a "Magic & Miracles" book, September 27, 2007
My mom has ALWAYS been a fan of Sarah Mlynowski, unfortunetly these are the only children's books she has! I really hope that Sarah writes another book!

I started to read Bra's and Broomsticks when my friend Sammik (sam) told me that it was the best book that she's EVER read! So, she let me borrow it, and I read the first 4 chapters in ONE day! Then I told my mom that I had to get it!!!!!!!!!!!!! So, she let me get it, and I became an addict to the book, I just couldn't put in down, now I'm 1/2 way through the 2nd book, Spells and Sleepingbags!

This book is about a teenage girl named Rachel, and she has somewhat been a nobody her whole life. And yet, she finds out that her more developed sister is a witch! She finds out that it's passed down in your family jeans, but for some reason Rachel doesn't get powers! Now that her sister has powers, she starts to use her sister...

1. They try to stop her dad from marring a woman who's like Cruela Devil, they call her STB (soon to be)

2. They give Rachel a killer dance move potion

3. They try to get their dad to fall back in love with they're mother, who has been secretly crushing on him ever since they divorced

4,5,6,7 MANY MANY MORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE THIS BOOK

4.0 out of 5 stars Hijinks and Hilarity, January 21, 2007
There are plenty of stories out there about a young girl becoming a witch, learning how to control her powers, and embracing her destiny. What about being the only girl in the female who is NOT a witch?

Rachel thinks her life is pretty average - until she learns that her mother and her little sister Miri are witches and she is not. She's stuck being an ordinary high school girl while they're bonding over spells and potions. How unfair!

Maybe, though, she can get some of Miri's talents to rub off on her - or on her crush, to make his head finally turn her way. Filled with funny dialogue and pratfalls, great for fans of Bewitched and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, this series will leave readers spellbound!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I smiled and laughed out loud so much with this one that my roomate couldn't wait for me to finish so she could get her hands on it. It's one of the better young adult books and totally believable. I had more fun with this book probably than anything else I've read. Couldn't wait to read the 2nd one!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good start to this series, February 13, 2009
I've read several of Ms. Mlynowski's chick lit books and ran across this book at the library. Having enjoyed her adult fiction, I decided to give this one a try. Rachel is just like any teenage girl: worried about wearing the latest fashion, crushing on the cute, popular guy in school and trying to maintain her friendships. It's not like she doesn't have enough already on her plate when she discovers her younger sister and her mother are both witches.

After getting over the shock (and the disappointment that she's not a witch), she convinces her sister to use some magic (against their mother's orders) to help her win over the "in" crowd and break-up her father and soon-to-be step-mother. What Rachel doesn't realize is, she should be careful what she wishes for because she might just get it.

Although Rachel makes poor choices and uses her sister's spells for selfish gain, she soon realizes what she thought she wanted isn't better than what she currently has. Bras & Broomsticks is a light, fun read, however it speaks to an important message: do not take for granted the important people in your life. Also, we sometimes may need a reminder that we cannot force other people to always do or be what we expect of them.

I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

This book was so good, and I really got in to it. It was so hard to put down because just as one good part ended, another began. It is filled with suspense and humor. It was apsolutely fantastic!! I highly recomend this book to anyone in middle-school. Once you finish this book, you will want to go straight into the next!! The sequel is equally fantastic with all of the suspense and humor as in this one. I am actually waiting to get the third one, Spells and Sleeping Bags. I cannot wait to start it!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Could you have a witch as a sister?, March 22, 2007
A Kid's Review
Could you handle your sister being a witch? That's what Rachel has to deal with suddenly. Miri, Rachel's sister, has gotten the gift of witchcraft passed down from her mother. Rachel asks Miri to give her a popularity spell, but Miri says no, but Rachel asks Miri to put a spell on their father, so he won't marry his evil fiancé. Miri decides that since the rest of her father's life is in her hands, she says that it would be ok to use her magic, even though her mother told her no magic until her training is done. The first spell Miri tries is a dancing spell on Rachel. Miri's first spell works, and Rachel is a dancing queen. Miri tries a spell on STB and her father, but it fails. Miri finds another spell, for honesty, but again the spell fails. Mean while, Rachel's dating one of the most popular freshmen, Raf, her crush. Will Miri find a spell before the wedding?

I enjoyed reading the book "Bras & Broomsticks". It kept me reading and interested. I would defiantly recommend this book to any girl who likes reading about fantasy and realistic-fiction. This was a great book, and I can't wait to read the next one.
