Book Description

June 4, 2009
"The Broons Days Oot" - is a guide to days out in Scotland, with extensive coverage of Historic Scotland and National Trust for Scotland sites. There are ideas to go to Galleries and Museums, visit Castles and Gardens, join in a Ghost Walk, enjoy a day at the Highland Games and many more activities that the whole family can do together, just like The Broons! The Broons family love to go on 'days oot!' - family outings, usually accompanied by a feast in an expedition-sized hamper, tartan travel rugs and the odd spare pair of socks! There are cameos from all of the Broons - their favourite trips and places to go. Edinburgh Castle, Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum, New Lanark World Heritage Site, and Culzean Castle are amongst the most visited places in Scotland. This book is packed with ideas to get folk out and about in Scotland - there's so much to see and enjoy. They take turns choosin' where. Sometimes they go in the car or on the bus, or take the bikes - there's so much to see that's not so far off from the But an' Ben. Sometimes it's a castle or the botanics, or a garden that's open somewhere - Granpaw has his favourites. Horace likes museums and galleries. They are all very keen on the Highland Games, so that's definitely one to look forward to, but Maw makes sure there is a bit of fun for everyone. The Broons all love a boat trip, or perhaps just a day at the beach is the very dab. And there are a few wee tips from Maw about what goes in the hamper! There's a folded wall map of 'Interesting Scotland', borrowed from Glebe Street School (Horace and his pals did a class project - they started with a basic map of Scotland and stuck on all the interesting places they could find, or had been to - some with small photos clipped from leaflets/newspapers/advertisements), and listings of useful information about Scotland's main sites. One thing's for sure - they are all happy days!

Editorial Reviews

Review

'It may seem odd that a series of books reflecting the Broons' distinctly dated way of life should become the Scottish publishing success story of the present decade. Yet - 18 months ago Maw Broon's Cookbook was number one bestseller for nine weeks, easily outselling the latest offerings from such celebrity foodies as Jamie Oliver and Nigella Lawson. The follow-up, Maw Broon's But an' Ben Cookbook, shot straight to the top of the Scottish charts last year. Now the Broons are taking on the world of travel literature with a new book seemingly tailor-made for our straightened economic times. The Broons Days Oot! explores the vast riches of a nation without blowing the housekeeping, bringing effortless wit and authority to every expedition, from a ramble up Ben Nevis to a dander down the Royal Mile. Never once does a Broon character step out of character. Their days out are punctuated with tartan travel rugs, picnic hampers, boiled sweets for the car trips and knotted handkerchiefs for days on the beach. And yet, while this may reek of nostalgia for a bygone age, the 52 expeditions featured in the book remain unerringly relevant to the modern tourist itinerary. In a rare concession to the 21st century, the Broons even provide website details for the attractions they visit. The Broons are hitting the road for the ultimate nostalgia trip... a journey that celebrates the delights of our great nation and the values that bind us together. --Scottish Daily Mail

'Packed with ideas for what to see and do on day-trips around Scotland - a cracking selection of over 200 places to go and things to do. And The Broons Days Oot isn't just groundbreaking for its unique take on holidaying in Scotland. It is also the first book to come out in Scotland in Braille on publication date - usually it takes months after the book's launch to achieve this.' --The Sunday Post

A clever book Waverley s books on the Broons have become something of a publishing sensation. The Broons Days Oot! will appeal to those who'd never usually dream of buying a travel book and even those who hardly ever travel! A highly entertaining guide to what Scotland has to offer. --The Lanark Gazette
