I absolutely love this machine! Sewing since I was young this is the first sewing machine I've owned that's more than basic (or super old!). The automatic bobbin feed and threader is the best invention ever! I have a lot of trouble threading needles because of tremor in my hands and bad eyes -- this makes it SUPER easy. I do agree with some of the other reviews, it takes a few minutes to figure out how to use the automatic threader, but once you do it's amazing how quick and easy it is. My last sewing machine had trouble sewing through layers of thick duck cloth -- this was able to zip right through with no problems whatsoever. I have only had the machine for a few days, and haven't explored all the options yet. I basically have only used it for basic sewing, but so far it is great. The foot control is very sensitive to the pressure you put on it, so you are able to sew as quickly or slowly as you want. My last machine would either not move at all or move at what felt like a million miles an hour :-) The manual so far has been very useful, it's detailed and has lots of diagrams. For the price, I feel like this machine is an awesome deal and would recommend it to anyone.

I bought the Brother 5500 Project Runway machine to teach myself how to sew. I have to say, so far so good. For new sewers, yes it can be complicated, but so are most sewing machines. That's why there are beginner classes in places like Joanne's.
I'm made my way through most of the instruction manual and I'm pretty excited to start making my first project.
Having so many different types of stiches is awesome!
The automatic threader is SWEET! Especially since I now have 40 year old eyes. :) It took about 10 minutes to figure it out the first time, but that's not really a big deal.
I would definitely buy this machine again. I've seen great reviews about the quality of the Project Runway models all over the internet & that's what helped me to decide on this brand. I think this model will also serve me well when I become a more experienced sewer as well.

My husband bought this machine for me as a birthday gift. I will start by saying I really am a beginner and was very pleased that I got the machine threaded and managed to repair a cloth purse with it. Since I really don't know what I am doing I found the included manual very helpful in getting the machine set up. I also like that it has so many stitch options and it was easy even for a novice like myself to figure out how to change stitches with the included chart in the manual. Overall I am very happy with my purchase and am excited to start sewing some fabulous curtains and pillows. I only gave it 4 stars out of five because the bobbin cover and some other parts are plastic and I think metal would be a more sturdy option. However for what it cost and the fact that I can actually manage to use the machine I am happy.

I just started sewing about two months ago and I love this machine. I did a lot of research and found this was one of the best for the money. I would have saved more buying through Amazon, but I was overanxious and bought at WalMart! Directions in the manual are super easy to read and I was up and running in about 30 minutes (and I am a complete beginner!). Yes the bobbins are plastic, as are most bobbins these days for most machines. Also, I had no issues with the self threader (however, if you have trouble seeing, that probably would be an issue), but if your eyesight is relatively good, you shouldn't have any problems. Threading the bobbin is ridiculously easy as is changing thread and loading the bobbin in my opinion. My mom told me that's the hardest part of sewing in her opinion and I picked that up right away with this machine because it makes it so easy.

Love the stitches, though I have only used about 3 of them. Yes this machine does not remember the last stitch, but it only takes a few clicks to put it back, so really not a big deal. I think it does this so you don't try to start sewing a straight stitch when you start it up and have a zigzag or something.

Overall, I am extremely happy with this machine. I've used it to make roughly 10 projects or so thus far and it has worked fantastically! I've sewn fleece, cotton, denim, knit, jersey, etc. all with no issues.
Love the extras this machine comes with too. Broke the needle once by going over a pin and there was a replacement. Also love the different included feet, extra bobbins and different needles. :)
VERY HAPPY!

I bought this Machine and sorry to say, I had it less then 2 years and it broke. It is cheaper to buy a new machine then to try to get it repaired. This is my second Brother . The first one the Bobbon Case had to be replaced alot, and this one just stopt sewing for no reason. Great Machine until it breakes. I am bummed out, because now I have to buy another one, maybe at a Retail Store this time, wheer I can get some help when the Machine breakes.

After watching lots of videos about sewing projects, I finally settled down with this Brother CE-5500. This is my very first hands-on sewing machine. I can't say that it is comparable to my grandma's old metal, vintage one back home, but when you finish a project using your own machine, the excitement and the sense of accomplishment are way over your concern of the machine quality. It is light weight, easy to carry or move. For a newbie like me, the instruction and online videos helped a lot to understand the basics. Having been using it for half a year now, my seam is not as skew as I first practiced with it. The price is good for a tight budget, also reasonable for a beginner.
