5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners!!!
Prior to purchasing the CP-6500 I had never used a sewing machine and this was a great machine to learn on. The instruction manual is very clear and the machine itself is amazing with so many stocking options. The auto bobbin winder and feeder are great functions. 1.0 out of 5 stars so frustrating
After reading all the reviews, I ordered this item to replace an old Brother machine I have had for years. For the first couple of months everything was great. Two weeks after the return window closed (of course) it started acting up. I cannot get the tension correct and have tried everything - cleaning, re threading, changing needles, making sure the needle size and...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for mother-daughter newbies!, June 15, 2011
This review is from: Brother CP-6500 Computerized Sewing Machine (Kitchen)
So, I have never used a sewing machine in my life, HOWEVER, my daughter has been trying to sew all sorts of things by hand. Since I have no idea how to teach her to sew, and classes aren't really available within a reasonable driving distance, I decided it was time for a machine for her 8th birthday. This machine is unbelievable! The manual makes everything seem so easy, from loading the bobbin, to changing out and using the various different feet. Our first project was a denim handbag, made from the bottom of a pair of old jeans. We even made the button hole for a cute little button to keep it closed! I can't seem to stop thinking about all of the possible projects that we are going to be undertaking during this hot summer break!

I can't compare this to other machines, of course. But I can definitely say that if you're a newbie and looking for something high-quality but not difficult to handle, this is it.

I cannot believe how much I love this maching. I have been using the same Singer machine for over 40 years and finally decided on an upgrade. I read a lot of reviews on this machine and it sounded perfect for me. It is so easy to get started on and very quiet. The machine is very light weight also. I have not utilized many of the extra features as the type of sewing I am doing at this time is very basic. As soon as I have time, I plan to experiment with the various stitches and attachments. So far it has operated extremely well and I plan to pick up sewing as a hobby once more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brother CP-6500, June 22, 2011

I bought this for my 8 yr. old granddaughter's birthday. She wants to sew and this seemed a good one to start. All the sewers at her party were in awe. It was very easy to set up. Instructions were easy to follow. Her Mother made it clear she must have supervision at all times and it was so easy and fun, I am sure her Mom will be right there to sew as well.
My other daughter who does sew, now wants this one for HER birthday. She has a heavy foot and has difficulty controlling her speed when she gets going. This machine has different speeds and held her to whatever pace she set it.
All in all, from instructions to threading the machine and needle (yes, it does this too!), to using the computerized stitching and button hole maker, this one is a BEST BET!

This is a great machine, easy to use everything I was looking for in a new machine, I had been sewing with a 40 year old brother and decided it was time for a new one when I found out I was getting my first grand baby and it was a girl. I read many reviews and they were all good for this machine so I went for it and I am glad I did. I could not be happier.

I like this machine. It's easy to use and very fast. Unfortunately, like with all newer Brother machines, it just isn't made to last like the machines of yesteryear..I've had 2 other brother computerized machines and they usually work well for about a year, then the problems begin. After my 2nd went to poo, I purchased a Singer Heavy duty machine, which started having all kinds of problems within a few weeks. So I went back to Brother, but not totally satisfied.. Today's machines are built so cheaply, it's just unfortunate that a customer can't buy a certain brand knowing it will last for years.. Nothing lasts for years anymore... It's a sad situation!!

I have a Brother machine from 1954 that is more dependable than these newer machines.. The problem with the older machines is that they don't do any fancy stitching and can't sew on many of todays fabrics, like knits. But the point is, they used to make Brother machines to last!! Modern sewing machines are not built to last. Sad but true.

Having said that, though, if you're looking for a machine that does a lot and you don't intend to use it on a daily basis, then this kind of machine will work well for you. If you plan to use it daily for hours at a time, it probably won't last more than a couple of years before it starts having issues..

I've realized a couple of things about these machines that really help keep it running good, which is why I'm updating my feedback.. They really need to be cleaned under the needle plate/bobbin cartridge a lot.. If you sew a lot, then you'll need to clean them probably once a week. The needle needs to be changed frequently.. I think this may be a today's needle situation.. They, too, are not built to last like the needles of yesteryear.. They get dull quickly and really effect the way the machine sews..

I'd also like to add something I've discovered in the last month. I've updated to a Bernina sewing machine... There are a LOT of the same features on the computerized Brother that are found on a Bernina.. The brother is not built as well, but Brother has obviously incorporated a lot of the features that sell a Bernina machine. I never would have realized that if I hadn't purchased a Bernina.. For that, I'm impressed with what Brother is incorporating into a machine that cost much less than a Bernina..

5.0 out of 5 stars sew Impressed!!, September 20, 2011

I'm new at sewing but used a few diff machines in my classes brought in by other students. I also remember my moms sewing machine from the 70's. That was sturdy! The ones we used in class were NOT. After reading over a hundred reviews on several diff brother models I settled on this one and am very impressed. It feels like a solid machine! Sure many of the external parts are plastic like the thread arm and foot lift lever, but I'm not worried. I LOVE that the handle is not an extra piece on top of the machine. Its a generous groove-like part of the machine so when u lift it, you are lifting the machine with confidence. I LoVE the speed control button and the needle button in addition to the foot pedal. These are 2 sparate buttons in addition to a reverse button which does one stitch at a time. I just feel like I have so much control which is nice as a beginner. Its computerized so I'm going to have to play with it to understand all of the complex stitches and settings, but it feels so precise. I practiced my straight stitch for a seam last night and it was so nice!! This machine is high quality! It came with every attachment I could need! I think I got like 6 diff feet in addition to other things! I like that the power cord is separate from the pedal cord and almost everything has a built in thread cutter. U don't need a scissors at all! Its beautiful too! And even though the manual is a little confusing like most reviews have said, the machine is very user friendly and self explanatory w guides rt on the machine. The manual is useful though too! And amazon is the best for online shopping. They have the BEST prices and always exceed my shipping expectations even w their free super saver shipping. I ordered my machine on the 16th and received it by the 19th. I didn't pay extra or anything I expected it in 5-8 business days! I'm really excited about my new sewing "career" but even more so because of my machine! I love it! I'm even reading the manual cover to cover which includes many tips u might not consider as a beginner. :) LOVE IT!! My sewing instructor at joannes told me to get a brother secretly because she was supposed to recommend only brands that joann's sells. They do NOT sell brothers. She's been teaching sewing for more than 40 years! I'm so happy!

Never touched a sewing machine or used a sewing machine in my life. Ordered the Brother CP-6500 to start with some basic sewing tasks around the house. About ten minutes after opening the box, I had it set up and started sewing. Using it mainly to make my own polishing pads to polish my Harley and I couldn't be happier. Very easy to set up, more stitching patterns than I'll ever use and selecting the one you want is so simple.

I lost a lot of weight, and wanted to be able to alter some of my linen tank tops so that I could still wear them. I decided that since I did not have a sewing machine, I would check out which ones would be basic but still have the ability to do things like finishing off edges and hemming. After consulting a few sites, I found this machine--and Amazon.com had the best price! I haven't sewn anything in years, so you could say I am a novice. This little machine has everything that I could ever want on it, and it is easy to set up and use. I love the self-threading feature. The computerized stitch choices are more than I will ever need, but they are nice to have the option. Love that there are different feet, needles and accessories--stored in one of the removable areas.

I love this machine! Shipping was fast, and everything arrived in perfect condition! Great price for a real little workhorse sewing machine. Don't hesitate!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Sewing Machine, August 18, 2011

I wanted to wait before posting this review. The CP6500 that I received was refurbished. I was apprehensive, but when I saw all the great reviews on this model, I knew I had to try it. This machine is amazing! Once you learn to thread it & the bobbin properly, it's a dream. I've made several dresses for me & my almost one year old daughter from it, along with some pants for my son. The stitches are beautiful, and the guide is your best friend! The accessories are great, too. I'm in love with the buttonhole stitching, as I've never had that. The needle threader is great if your threads aren't too thick. I've been sewing since I was 12, but there is always something new to learn, and I'm confident that beginners can work well with this machine because all the directions in the manual are very easy to understand. I feel that this machine is good for people who are experienced but looking for a good machine on a modest budget.

The only thing that I don't like is that when the threads happen to get stuck, it makes a really loud noise, and it's somewhat startling. But, the manual tells you exactly how to correct the problem after reading the error code. Overall, I really recommend this machine.
