Great light weight machine, May 6, 2010
This review is from: Brother XR 7700 Computerized Sewing Machine w/Free Bonus Feet
I have a Viking, but purchased this when my Viking was in for repair. I've wanted a backup that was dependable & I didn't want to tote around my heavy, expensive Viking. I needed a lighter, more portable machine that I could tote around for my weekly quilt group.
This machine performs better than expected. It sewed through some fairly thick layers with ease. Top loading bobbin threading is a cinch. Quite a few features that my older computerized Viking does not have (auto needle threader!). The only thing that I currently wish it had was a way for the thread to lay horizontal like my Viking does. But this little machine has more stitches. Most importantly, it has specialty quilting stitches...like the blanket stitch & piecing stitch & also has "needle down" default & quilt extension table.
The adjustable speed is great for teaching kids or for detailed applique. Just a great machine all around. I would recommend it to any of my friends although I have a friend who has the step up from this that has basic alphabet embroidery. That would be nice. Some Brother accessories (bobbins & 2 feet) are available at Walmart.
Keep in mind that this machine is designed for QUILTING, but can be used for regular sewing. I find that the needle down default is annoying when doing sewing projects (button for needle up/down)....but awesome for quilting.

Brother Computerized sewing machine XR 7700, November 3, 2010
This review is from: Brother XR 7700 Computerized Sewing Machine w/Free Bonus Feet
I am enjoying my Brother XR 7700 machine so much! My old machine is a mechanical Kenmore about 18 years old, has served me well and still does a great job; so it was with great trepidation that I moved to a computerized machine. I did not want to spend much money on this endeavor. I studied the various machines in my price bracket: $150 - $250, decided I would go with the Brother machines, then studied five Brother models -- searching the internet, making a spreadsheet to compare the various features. I decided on the Brother XR 7700. The add-on flat working space is wonderful. Many folks had complaints about the automatic needle threader (The directions on the DVD, as well as the instruction book were not all that clear on how to use it); but by combining the book and the DVD (and my husband's mechanical expertise) I mastered it quickly and now wonder how I ever got along without this convenience. Because my old mechanical machine was so heavy, it never bounced or wandered on the table; so I was concerned about the light weight of the XR7700 -- afraid that it would bounce and scoot -- but it does not! I also love the button you push to raise and lower the needle; and the choice of speeds is absolutely great! I don't know how I ever did without it! I was so pleased with the machine that I ordered one for my daughter's family and they are tickled with theirs also.
