Great light weight machine,

I have a Viking, but purchased this when my Viking was in for repair. I've wanted a backup that was dependable & I didn't want to tote around my heavy, expensive Viking. I needed a lighter, more portable machine that I could tote around for my weekly quilt group.
This machine performs better than expected. It sewed through some fairly thick layers with ease. Top loading bobbin threading is a cinch. Quite a few features that my older computerized Viking does not have (auto needle threader!). The only thing that I currently wish it had was a way for the thread to lay horizontal like my Viking does. But this little machine has more stitches. Most importantly, it has specialty quilting stitches...like the blanket stitch & piecing stitch & also has "needle down" default & quilt extension table. The adjustable speed is great for teaching kids or for detailed applique. Just a great machine all around. I would recommend it to any of my friends although I have a friend who has the step up from this that has basic alphabet embroidery. That would be nice. Some Brother accessories (bobbins & 2 feet) are available at Walmart. Keep in mind that this machine is designed for QUILTING, but can be used for regular sewing. I find that the needle down default is annoying when doing sewing projects (button for needle up/down)....but awesome for quilting.

I am enjoying my Brother XR 7700 machine so much! My old machine is a mechanical Kenmore about 18 years old, has served me well and still does a great job; so it was with great trepidation that I moved to a computerized machine. I did not want to spend much money on this endeavor. I studied the various machines in my price bracket: $150 - $250, decided I would go with the Brother machines, then studied five Brother models -- searching the internet, making a spreadsheet to compare the various features. I decided on the Brother XR 7700. The add-on flat working space is wonderful. Many folks had complaints about the automatic needle threader (The directions on the DVD, as well as the instruction book were not all that clear on how to use it); but by combining the book and the DVD (and my husband's mechanical expertise) I mastered it quickly and now wonder how I ever got along without this convenience. Because my old mechanical machine was so heavy, it never bounced or wandered on the table; so I was concerned about the light weight of the XR7700 -- afraid that it would bounce and scoot -- but it does not! I also love the button you push to raise and lower the needle; and the choice of speeds is absolutely great! I don't know how I ever did without it! I was so pleased with the machine that I ordered one for my daughter's family and they are tickled with theirs also.

Got this for a birthday present, LOVE IT.. It has so many features and easy to use, lightweight, easy thread for the visually impaired same for the bobbin! love it, smooth sewing, no hang ups for me! also do not need the presser foot to use, it sews with on machine buttons, great for sewing with my toddler running around, he can't step on it(foot pedal) and mess me up! I can't wait to do more with this machine, all the deco stitches, and quilting stuff. it comes with a getting started dvd, and a machine dust cover (hard plastic, no locks though)

Brother Computerized Sewing Machine XR7700,

I did a lot of research before buying this machine. I intended to buy new, but missed the sale price before they sold out. I found this refurbished machine, and decided it would serve my needs just as well. I haven't had time to use all the features yet - mostly mending for now. My only complaint so far is that the LED display doesn't light up, so is difficult to read. Otherwise I would highly recommend this machine.

Perfect for Beginner and for the Most EXPERIENCED,
This review is from: Brother XR 7700 Computerized Sewing Machine w/Free Bonus Feet
I got this machine after a year of messing with a 500.00 dollar Singer. My mother in law bought me a singer for my birthday a couple of years ago. I had nothing but trouble with it. I Tried to return it, tried to contact singer, nothing worked but the BBB. I bought this machine because costco had a sell and it had more features then the expensive Singer. I decided that I was going to wait 1 year before I gave this machine a review, that way I could really give a experinced one. I have a store on ESTY.COM. I sew almost everyday for 4-6 hours. This Machine is wonderful. It has given me a couple tension problems, but all I do is turn the machine off and restart it and it's perfect again. After struggling for so long with the Singer this was a true blessing. It is so easy to use and to understand. It has a lot of handy features like "It won't sew if your presser foot is up" Even the most experience sewer needs that feature. It does beautiful work and all the decrotive stitches are beatiful and so easy to use. I love that it has three speeds so you are able to control it better!!! If you are working with something very delicate you could put it on the slowest speed and have your petal all the way down and still be a able to control the material you are working on. I would recomend this machine to begginers and to the most experienced. I have had no problems, and am very appy to have such a reliable machine :0 )

Trouble with the automatic threader,
This review is from: Brother XR 7700 Computerized Sewing Machine w/Free Bonus Feet
Brother XR 7700 Computerized Sewing Machine - This machine seemed really nice and at a good price. But I had problems with the automatic threader and no amount of trouble shooting worked. Even my sewing teacher was at a loss. I returned it for a full refund and am now looking for a new machine. I wish I could rate it well but I did not ahve good luck with it.
