**Written on 1/10/2012 (six month update)** I am happy to report the following review holds true after 6 months of daily use. I have not experienced anything disappointing and I am very happy with this product. I have not had a single malfunction or any "cutting errors" I speak of in the review using other machines. Near the end of the review I added a note on battery consumption which to my surprise has been very efficient.
What began as an earnest attempt at following the "Get Things Done" plan ended up becoming a crash course in Label machines. I have purchased 4 different machines and returned 3 of them. The Brother PT2030 is my clear choice for a favorite between them and for a couple of very good reasons.
Wanting to get things done I bought the first one from Walmart and it was the Dymo Letratag plus LT-100 (aprox. $18). I immediately knew it was a poor choice once I started using it because unlike this machine you need what seems like secret codes to add an icon or do anything fun to your label. This machine allows the user to scroll through more options than I thought were possible, it literally has most anything you can think of that you may need on a label. My second problem was the amount of use I got from 6 brand new Duracell AAA batteries, no more than 15 small labels before they were almost drained completely. Although the machine was cheap it would cost a fortune to use. The Brother has been running on the same brand batteries but AA instead and I have printed over 100 labels and there is no sign of slowing down (this model on amazon comes with a power adapter I got mine from staples and it did not). It was obvious I had to get rid of the first machine after I discovered those 2 problems plus a couple of others.Read more ›
This is a very nice, reasonably priced label maker for general, household use. It has one semi-tragic flaw: the screen is not back-lighted and difficult to read. If the screen were better, I would give this product at least one additional star.
The next thing you should know is that this machine makes labels, lots of them. More styles of labels than anyone could ever want or need. Or so it seems to me. 1) There are 4 fonts (serif, non-serif, bold modern, calligraphy script), each with 10 type styles (bold, italic, outline, shadow, etc.) 2) There are 16 types of plain or decorative frames or borders. 3) There are various block printing formats that print up to 5 lines of text. 4) There are templates for binder spines, file folder tabs, hanging folder tabs, address labels, cable wraps, name badges, CD case spines, etc. 5) You can print bar codes. You can print little images or dingbats. 6) There is a label collection of 50 pre-selected, pre-formatted subjects such as: "Respond Immediately!", "No Smoking", "Do Not Disturb", "Warning! Hot!", "Happy Birthday" and many, many others. 7) You can set the machine to work in 19 different European languages including Dansk, Magyar, Polski, and Türkçe.
As if that is not enough choice, there is the decision about the tape. This particular model accepts 5 tape widths (0.13", 0.23", 0.36", 0.47". 0.7") but only the three widest are readily available. The tapes come in seven styles: normal adhesive, strong adhesive, acid free, tamper evident, iron-on tape, super narrow, and flexible laminated for cable tags. There are an endless variation of print colors and background styles: black on white, black on clear, black on yellow, black on red, white on black, gold on black, etc.Read more ›
The PT2030AD Desktop Labeler AC Adapter Hardware is the perfect solution for making sharp, distinctive labels in the office and home. If you have never used a Brother Labeler, you simply cannot imagine all the uses. I first used an earlier model to label notebooks but once I started using the labeler for one office task, I began discovering more and more uses for these easy to read, classy looking labels! As compared to the earliest models, the PT2030AD is a sleeker desktop tool and lighter to make portable use more convenient for trade shows, hobby activities, and other activities such as labeling moving boxes. Quite simple, it feels more comfortable to hold than the earlier models.
The PT2030AD kit includes the labeler, the AC adapter, one starter Cassette and a thick user guide in English and Spanish. Inserting and removing the cassettes is easy and intuitive. Make sure to use the tape feed when inserting a new cassette to prevent separation within tape. The one issue that plagued the earlier model I used was tape separation which rendered the cassette unusable even when plenty of tape remains. So far, I have not experienced tape separation with the PT2030AD model despite multiple uses.
Users will need the user guide to see all the options available and figure out how to set the menu functions. Having used an earlier model, I was able to plug and play a bit without use of the guide but I still need to refer to the manual to make full use of all the choices in the menu. For basic functions, a user has a choice of font, size, width and style. The guide gives clear examples of these as well as using frames, templates as well as tips for maintaining product and troubleshooting. A brochure explaining all the tape varieties is also included in the package.Read more ›
