5.0 out of 5 stars Extraordinary presentation of a very complex subject
This book impressed me because it presents a layman's view of prostate cancer in a very personal manner. The statistics presented in the book are an education on the number of African American men stricken with the disease. Reading this book has given both my husband and me a new perspective on prostate cancer and generated an interest in doing what we can to...

This review is from: Brother to Brother: You Don't Have to Die With Prostate Cancer (Paperback)
As a physician recently diagnosed with prostate cancer, I found the book entertaining and easy to read in 2-3 hours due to the large text. I applaud him for encouraging men to have their prostates checked starting in their 40's. Unfortunately, the book is directed to Blacks more than to all men. The reader is cautioned that the author delays treatment and eventually chooses one form of therapy at a specific institution. The treatment option that has the greatest chance for cure is downplayed. Use this book as only one resource among several. Also, I would have liked more encouragement to let the diagnosis change your life for the better. Best wishes.

The statistics presented in the book are an education on the number of African American men stricken with the disease. Reading this book has given both my husband and me a new perspective on prostate cancer and generated an interest in doing what we can to educate others. I recommend the book highly for anyone who wants to learn about the disease, anyone who has the disease, and families of those stricken with the disease. Dr. Walker has presented a very complex subject in terms that anyone can understand. Bravo!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Physician reviews book, February 9, 2001

This review is from: Brother to Brother: You Don't Have to Die With Prostate Cancer (Paperback)
In the only randomized placebo-controlled study every done on the radical prostatectomy, radical surgery was no better than placebo. Reverend Walker seems to figure this out. Instead of being pushed into surgery by several urologists he undergoes the much less harmful treatment of radiation seed implants. Definitely read this book and note how much pressure was put on the reverend to undergo surgery, while other less harmful options were ignored. The reverend triumphs over his urologists.

This review is from: Brother to Brother: You Don't Have to Die With Prostate Cancer (Paperback)
This book chronicles more than one man's struggle with this dreadful disease. It provides spiritual hope for the masses of men who are having the same experience. It proves that I don't have to die SPIRITUALLY, SEXUALLY, EMOTIONALLY OR PHYSICALLY from prostate cancer! Thank you, Thomas L. Walker!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Physician reviews Brother to Brother, May 10, 2003

This review is from: Brother to Brother: You Don't Have to Die With Prostate Cancer (Paperback)
In Brother to Brother, Reverend Thomas Walker is encouraged to have radical surgery over and over again by urologists who practice bad medicine. The Reverend seems to know propoganda when he sees it and refuses to have his body destroyed for no benefit. He makes good decisions despite the urological establishment's pressure to do the wrong thing. A nice enjoyable read. Like the other physician who reviewed this book, I rate it very high.

This review is from: Brother to Brother: You Don't Have to Die With Prostate Cancer (Paperback)
I've never read a book dealing with such a critical subject yet readable and understandable and inclusive. Brother to Brother brings the whole family together in a concise understanding of Prostate cancer and other chronic diseases. Women should encourage the men in their lives, husbands, sons, fathers, uncles, etc. to read and understand the threat of prostate cancer to our families and communites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for anyone confronted with this dilemma!, December 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Brother to Brother: You Don't Have to Die With Prostate Cancer (Paperback)
Rev. Walker has captured a very emotional experience in a concise and readable manner. He takes the reader on an unforgettable journey of anxiety; confusion; doubt; revelation; indecision and the whole gamut of emotional dysfunction that accompanies being diagnosed with cancer.

As a layman, he has a knack for asking the right questions and taking technical terms and turning them into plain, everyday language.

This book should be read by all men (and their families) who are confronted with a diagnosis or who are symptomatic of prostate cancer. It is sincerely hoped that Rev. Walker will remain cured, for his experience in this paperback is worthy of a sequel...

5.0 out of 5 stars It's About Time!!, December 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Brother to Brother: You Don't Have to Die With Prostate Cancer (Paperback)
After reading just a few chapters of this thought-provoking and emotionally charged book, I mused to myself: "...it's about time that someone captured their experience in such a fashion that the average person could understand and relate to their message."

Thomas Walker's book reinforces the message that a diagnosis of cancer is devastating news; yet, with adjustments in mental attitudes and the support of loved ones, it is a challenge that can be understood and overcome.

Walker also maintains a delicate balance between medical and layman's language, which is a definite plus. This is even more meaningful because it is coming from a person who has "been there..."

Kudos to Walker for his courage, his commitment and his stamina in completing his project. I definitely look forward to reading a sequel to this amazing story, and I hope that one is in the works. It is definitely a "must-read."
