After dealing with an HP inkjet fax in my restaurant that kept jamming and having dried up ink from, I decided I needed a compact laser that would fit in the allocated area. This fit the bill, except that it was white and every other piece of equipment in the area was black.
Once I unboxed the unit, I used masking tape to cover the black areas and any open electronics. Using a simple flat black can of spray paint, I was able to make it all black. Nobody can tell it was painted even when I point it out to them. First problem fixed.
I have had the unit for about 7 months and it has performed flawlessly. It even uses the same toner as a wireless Brother printer I have which is a bonus as well. This past week of course, I encountered the DEEP SLEEP curse that so many people speak of. The machine will do half a ring and act weird, but will not receive faxes. After some research and playing around, there is a solution, even though Brother has decided to hide the feature.

You ARE able to disable DEEP SLEEP.

Go to General Settings, Ecology, Sleep Mode. When it asks you to change the time before sleep, simultaneously press the START and DOWN ARROW buttons. You will now get the hidden option to Disable DEEP SLEEP mode. Disable it and enjoy your fax for many years to come.

After receiving this fax at our business we set it up and received a couple of faxes. Things seemed good to go. Then we started getting calls from people who said that they were trying to send faxes and the line just kept ringing and ringing. We didn't totally believe them so we tested it out. Sure enough - sometimes when we called (from a cell phone) it answered and then other times it didn't. This fax replaced a old fax on a dedicated fax line that has worked perfectly for years, so it wasn't anything in the setup up to the fax machine itself.

When you look at the screen when it's not answering it's in "deep sleep" mode. This is apparently different than just regular "sleep mode." So you would think, "I'll just turn off deep sleep mode and that will solve the problem," except that you CAN'T turn off deep sleep mode. It's part of the "ECO" aspect of the fax and it's impossible to shut off in any of the menus.

So there you have it: a fax that receives faxes . . . . sometimes. . . . Not a very useful quality in a fax machine. You might think that I just got a lemon but Google this problem and see what you find. I'm not saying it's 100% of the faxes that do this, but clearly the one I got isn't the only one.

My old $20 fax machine works better than this one. The machine goes into "deep sleep" mode whenever it isn't in use. A fax may come in, and not be picked up while in this mode. The machine will "click" a few times and you have to go over and make the machine pick it up. Other times, the machine will receive the fax just fine. I called Brother and they told me it is working perfectly and that nothing is wrong with it. Don't buy this fax machine.

This was purchased as a replacement for our earlier 2820 Brothers Fax machine which we bought in 2005 and which had a worn out part. We are very pleased with the 2840 machine.. It works well and does what we need it to do. We hope it lasts as long as the earlier one. Would definitely recommend it.

I haven't used this for commercial purposes, so not sure how good it is for that, but this is a great cheap fax machine for home and light business use.

I have never had problems with fax going out of deep sleep mode. I had to work at home for a month due to an injury and got the machine for this. The print quality is really good and I had some 30 page faxes that came through fine. I am still using the toner cartridge that came with this and have received at least 300 pages. I haven't tried it for copying so not sure how it works for that.

Only reason I am giving this 4 stars instead of 5 is there is it won't print out a confirmation page and the auto detect between a voice and fax call doesn't seem to work correctly (it isn't a big deal since the only voice calls that come on my fax line are solicitors or wrong numbers but it would be a pain for someone sharing a voice and fax line)

I bought the 2840 fax machine to replace my older 1270 which finally gave up the ghost after some 20 odd years of continuous use. I typically use 22# paper because the slightly heavier weight does not cur as much as the 20# paper. T my dismay, I started experiencing paper jams, something I had never experienced with my old 1270. I changed back to using 20# paper to see if that was the cause. It worked well for a while and than started jamming again. I hate sending stuff back, so if anyone has a suggestion, I'd appreciate it. Other than that, the machine is much faster than my previous machine, and I can fax out while I'm receiving a fax. That's pretty cool.

We have a small home business about 20-30 pages a day. This works great no problems. I read other reviews about the sleep mode but we haven't had any trouble.
