5.0 out of 5 stars HL-1850
I have been a HP fan for many years but started looking at other manufacturers due to slow tech. support and high cost of consumables. HL-1850 has fit the bill. Half the cost per sheet compared to my HP. Output is clean and crisp. Built in duplexing. Quick and Quiet! And so far, no jams or problems of any kind. My views my change after wear and tear take their toll,...

2.0 out of 5 stars Excellent output and Extremely well built... but SQUEALS
I've owned several laser printers for my SOHO business. I had an HP 6P for several years and replaced it with this unit. Paper handling is terriffic- the manual tray allows you to easily enter envelopes and does not jam. Large input tray requires less attention. Unit feels tough... doors and trays snap closed firmly and open evenly. No wrestling. First page prints...

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh Brother, where art thou, oh there you are... hi., November 8, 2002

This printer is outstanding, and coming in at the exact same cost as the HL-1650 I had priced and planned to buy, it was an easy decision on my part. It prints fast, crisp, and has loads of features to tweak your ink usage. Not to mention it's direct feeder for items you don't want bent up like photopaper, and the multipurpose tray works great for letterheads, though I THOUGHT the MP tray was going to be an internal tray it's still nice. The reprint and cancel job buttons at the top of the printer also help to save time and end user head-aches, as the office personnel this printer was assigned to often got frustrated if they needed to open up the print que to cancel a print job.

If you're currently using an inkjet in any capacity make the switch NOW, this thing pays for it's self in a matter of months. I've yet to need another toner, but I'm sure the factory supplied one won't last as long as the others. I'll try and post an update to toner life when the time comes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brother HL-1850, November 28, 2002

I bought the Brother HL-1850 as my home office Laser Printer... ... [printer is] very easy to setup when the directions are followed. [printer] support parallel and USB connections which were new to me. The 1850 is larger, faster, prints on both sides of the page and has 16 meg of RAM... It also has a fold down tray for envelopes, legal sized paper etc. You can also purchase a network card for the 1850 if desired... [printer] warm up and print quickly... I've been very pleased with [the] printers and find them a good value for the money compared to HP models in a similar price range...

5.0 out of 5 stars Brother HL-1850 a Winner w/ Mac OS X.2.x, September 7, 2003

I run a Mac network with the Brother HL-1850 connected via USB to ab iMac that is wirelessly connected to a G3 PB, G3 iBook, and G4 PB 17". HL-1850 works flawlessly over Rendezvous (despite Apple not placing Brother on the "approved" printers list). Its fast, cheap to operate, and in 3 mos and about 8 reams of various standard paper has never failed. Two CAUTIONS:
1) Original printer did not print from Safari (worked w/ all other apps & browsers). Brother determined I had an early model w/ outdated ROM; overnighted a new printer w/ paid return shipping for the old. Ensure any Brother printer has the latest ROM.
2) Had initial problems printing complex .pdf files. A 128 MB RAM card solved it. Most RAM cards run $50. With Google you can get one delivered to your door for $25.
Bottom line. I couldn't be happier and suggest that duplex printing will save you 33% of operating costs (paper). Getting a full toner cartridge (vice a 50% charge) with the original printer is also nice.

As a grad student I tend to print a lot of research papers. I wanted to find a reasonably priced printer that would produce quality duplexed 2 sheets per page output (it saves paper). I decided on the Brother HL-1850 and I have been very happy so far (I have had the printer for about 1 month and run around 1,000 pages through it). For a few dollars I did add 128 MB of memory which increased the print speed dramatically. At first I was disappointed with the fact that symbols didn't print right or papers seemed to print as one big graphic which looked horrible. I found a solution to this problem though. For general printing (pdfs, docs, etc.) I use the BRScript driver, but when I need to print a .ps document I use the post script driver. The quality is great and I am very, very satisified. A great value and it does everything I need. This is my first experience with Brother, but it won't be my last.

I love my HP laser but needed a second printer, a more powerful one for the office. Before I spent twice as much on an HP I saw reviews raving about this Brother 1850. So I spent half as much and could not be happier. Wonderful printer! WOW!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars fine laser printer, December 14, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Brother HL-1850 Laser Printer (Office Product)
The machine is well built producing fine text and graphics and I really like the duplex feature. My Ibook's operating system is MacOS 10.3.6. I originally had problems printing pdf files with this printer. It turned out not all pdf's as I originally thought just some (also some web pages). The printer would process the data and then just abort the print with an ignore data message and sometimes not even that. Brother was nice enough to replace the printer with another 1850 with a later ROM version. It sounded as if it was a known problem. The original ROM version was 1.18, I now have version 1.25 and it seems to work fine on pdf files that were previously a problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding value, August 30, 2004
This review is from: Brother HL-1850 Laser Printer (Office Product)
This printer does exactly what I wanted it to do. It prints excellently in black and white for both text and graphics. It has automatic duplex (no more turning over the paper yourself!)that saves me money on paper and weight and space when carrying or filing. It is easy to use, and if you get the high-yield TN-560 toner cartridge instead of the standard TN-530 the cost per copy is very reasonable. You can share it with other people on your network through your own computer or you can hog it all for yourself. Changing the toner cartridge is a 5 minute job.

Its only drawback is that it is a bit big and heavy, but not enough to keep me recommending it. I used not to like Brother, but this printer and my MFC-8500 fax/printer/copier/black and white scanner have completely changed my mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY EASY SET UP, March 3, 2003
This review is from: Brother HL-1850 Laser Printer (Office Product)
I originally bought a multi-function unit and returned it (however, the MFC print quality was good). But I realized that I needed a dedicated printer for my PC work. I needed a fast printer and something that could handle some of the massive printing that I needed at times. Brother HL-1850 provided all my printing needs everything from school essays, labels, business cards, and also birthday cards. I am very happy with the performance of this printer. This was also an excellent buy with the features it has - this is comparable to high end models of HP laser. (I think HP lasers are way over priced)

Had it for over 6 years. Don't use it much, I guess - I am on my 3rd toner (after 12k pages printed), still it's been super reliable. Never a jam, never a single problem. One of the best purchases, ever.
