The Brother HL-1650N+ is ideal for small connected workgroups that require outstanding print quality along with dependability to keep up the pace during crunch time. This quick and capable laser printer speeds through printing of standard office documents with its built-in two-sided printing and a normal speed of 16 pages per minute.

Automatic e-mail printing, intelligent sleep mode, and secure job reprint are all standard features that can be operated from the intuitive three-button interface. Print clarity reaches an impressive 2,400 x 600 dpi, and the included toner cartridge has an expected lifetime of 6,500 pages. The lower paper tray can handle up to 250 sheets of letter or legal paper, while executive paper sizes, envelopes, transparencies, and labels can be printed from the upper tray. A third paper tray may be added, and the standard 24 MB of memory is expandable up to 136 MB.

Print drivers for the HL-1650N+ are compatible with Macintosh OS 8.0 or higher, as well as Windows 95/98/2000 and Windows NT. The printer can connect to either system via a USB or parallel port. The built-in 10/100 Ethernet interface connects the machine to workgroups. Brother provides a one-year warranty on parts and labor, which includes a convenient Express Exchange service.

The Brother HL-1650N+ laser printer is a great printer for the home or small office. Its 2,400 x 600 dpi maximum print resolution produces crisp text and graphics at a fast 16 ppm, plus it includes built-in duplex (two-sided) printing and an intuitive control panel with a three-color backlit LCD. For dual platform support, parallel and USB interfaces and a full suite of Windows and Mac drivers are included. Other features include 24 MB of memory expandable to 136 MB using 100-pin DIMMs, automatic interface switching, secure job reprinting, High Resolution Control (HRC), intelligent sleep mode, and automatic e-mail printing. A 10/100 Base-TX Ethernet is also built-in. Brother backs this printer with a one-year warranty.

I researched this purchase for some time. Concerns regarding longevity of the toner cartriges aside (see TN-560 reviews elsewhere on this site) I am so far very happy. Printer ships with 24MB RAM and a NIC interface card. Printer options are extensive and toner-save feature gives very legible output down to 300dpi (perhaps other reviewers need to check this out). First print out in about 15 seconds using the parallel cable then it seems to do 12-16 pages per minute in line with marketing claims. Lots of useful onboard menu options and duplex printing included. Separate 100 page multipurpose tray holds letterheads. Tech support very helpful when I called to check some setup options. Only reason not 4 stars is I have not had the printer very long but if it continues to perform as it has I would upgrade to 5 stars!

UPDATE after 2 weeks of ownership:

OK, so why did I put up with my HP InkJet for so long? No dropped toner or other problems to report after about 1500 pages. The toner save feature with duplex printing is THE BOMB for drafts. FAST too! At sub-$500 with 24MB of RAM this still looks like one of my best hardware buys ever. Stay tuned.

This printer is still going strong after 4 years. 5 STARS for sure now. Just brilliant.

I bought this printer for home use after doing quite a bit of shopping around. I even went to a the local Office Depot to check the print quality. For this price, only Samsung has a printer that closely matched this one in features. But the Brother was reccomended above the Samsung in some reviews elsewhere. There are many HP printers that cost considerably more at work and there is no visible difference in print quality.
Auto duplexing and network capability ... is a great deal. Both features work as advertised. Both mac and pc printed after installing the drivers. I haven't timed the printouts but there are no complaints there. Add more memory though, it takes a while to print pages with lots of pictures.
Buy it while it is still available!
