Editorial Reviews

Elvin Jones, the master of polyrhythmic drumming, is sui generis. Many of the things he was first to do are now—more than two decades after he joined what his presence made the John Coltrane Quartet—taken for granted, thought those of us who were around then still remember how utterly startling and wondrous it was. But even today, there is no drummer who gets the sound and feeling Elvin Jones does. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Elvin '82, with Workman, Kirkland and La Barbera, April 9, 2008
This review is from: Brother John (Audio CD)
Recorded October 1982 for the Palo Alto Jazz label. Five of the tunes are composed by tenor & soprano saxophonist Pat La Barbera; Tadd Dameron's "Whatever Possessed Me" and the lesser-known Cy Coleman ballad "Why Try To Change Me Now" finish out the set list along with John Coltrane's "Harmonique". Piano prodigy Kenny Kirkland (also on the contemporary Earth Jones album) is wonderful, and bassist supreme Reggie Workman's presence is a reunion with another Coltrane ensemble member. The disc label has a '24 Bit' logo; anyway the original recording and remastering sound excellent here.

superb companion volume to the Feb. 1982 Van Gelder-recorded Earth Jones Palo Alto session (also available on CD).
